The feud between former F1 drivers Tomas Enge and Mika Salo in the American Le Mans Series continued this past week-end. The problems started at last week's race at Lime Rock.Enge, in the GT2 Peterson-White Lighting Racing Ferrari, made an overly agressive move and took out both Riza Competizione Ferraris, on of which is driven by Salo. He managed to take out all three factory backed Ferraris in one swoop.
In this week's race at Mid Ohio, Enge and Salo were battling for the GT2 lead again. At the 38th minute, Salo was cut off by one of the Prototype (LMP) cars and braked hard. Enge hit him. The bumper of the Risi Ferrari was damaged and punctured a tire. Salo came back and intentionally spun Enge. The officials gave Enge, who was on probation from the Lime Rock affair, a 5 minute penalty, with Mika Salo only getting a two minute penalty.
Just after the 45 minutes mark had passed Enge came in for a regular pitstop. The discussion in the pit lane went on with Risi threatening to withdraw their cars if no action was taken against the Petersen-White Lightning driver.
Because of the intramural fighting in the Ferrari camp, the Flying Lizard Racing Porsche won the GT2 class both weeks.
From what I saw, Enge was innocent of wrongdoing. I think he was only punished because of the shunt last week.
The next race is Aug. 11 at Road America.
