A tiny fuel cel that detects the alcholic breath of a drink-driver and calls the police has been developed by engineers at Texas Christian University.A pump draws air in from the passenger cabin,a platinum catalst converts any alcohol to acetic acid, which in turn poduces a current proportional to the concentration of alcohol in the air.A chip analyses the data then calls the police via a wireless transmitter if levels are too high. The detector is so small and mounted on the steering wheel or sun visor 50 cm away from the drivers breath to avoid any false readings

Wizzo:

This is good  :good: anything to stop drink drivers on the road is a great idea in my opinion. All we need now is something to stop the ever increasing drug driving problem.

Slugger:
What happens if youre the designated driver and have a car full of drunks?

davewilson:
I thought of this as well slugger, and i guess when they catch up and stop you they breathalise the driver and they make the decision from there.I did move on a bit in the article and it said the device would have to be viewed every year as cigarettee smoke films up the sensor.I guess if you are going to do it,
open all the windows put on the air con and put the driver in a mask. Then buy a thousand Fags and you might be Ok
If America has got it it won't be long till it comes to our shores.
Food for thought
