Methinks The People are re-hashing old news.  Ron said these things before the season began when explaining to the press why he chose to put Hamilton in the second McLaren rather than de la Rosa.  As it turned out, he didn't need to give any excuses at all!

The statement comes at a time when there aren't really any poor drivers in F1 at all (there have been in the past - just ask Nelson Piquet about Eliseo Salazar).  GP2 has proved to be an excellent preparation for F1 and the young drivers arriving now are all good.  Of course they're not all future world champions but they are all quick enough to win a few races in the right car.

I think Ron was really talking about potential champions when he made the statement.  Obviously, it was too late for de la Rosa but Hamilton showed great promise even then.

Sakon Yamamoto?

Sakon Yamamoto?

He's not quite in until his first drive for Spyker, is he?  And he's better than Ide, for instance.  The point is really that Ron was exaggerating, to say the least, and the standard of F1 drivers is very high these days, even the pay drivers.  Sutil pays but is supposed to be pretty handy...

I agree. That's why I had such difficulty leaving anyone out of my original list.

You don't become an F1 driver if you don't cut the mustard, no matter how much you pay. Or do you?

I think a tiddler gets in every so often, like Ide, but not that often. I based my judgement of Yamamoto on his stint at Super Aguri last year.

And I wouldn't disagree with that judgement, Cozzie.  I prefer to regard him as not quite "in" yet, however; otherwise he ruins my argument.  :D

Hmmm, it looks as though F1 drivers might lose their skills after a while...

Seems Piquet has been a naughty boy in his old age.  Still, if you're going to lose your licence and be sent back to school, it had better be for speeding if you're an ex-F1 driver.

In his younger days he'd have outrun them.  :D

Oh dear.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall watching Nelson at his lessons.
