Nelson Piquet loses drivers license
« on: August 02, 2007, 06:26:33 PM »

The question of the day is, "If you're tasked with teaching a three-time Formula One champ to drive, what's the curriculum?" Some instructor in Brazil will be forced to answer that very query when he gets Nelson Piquet behind the wheel for a refresher on the rules of the road.

Piquet, who's racked up quite a collection of speeding offenses and parking tickets, is being forced by a Brazilian judge to go back to school for 30 hours over the course of eight days, after which he'll be required to re-take the driving test.

The 54-year old F1 wiz seemed rather jovial when asked to comment on the matter, simply saying that, "I think we have to pay for our mistakes." We're more than interested to see how it turns out, and we'd expect his instructor to come away with a host of intriguing stories and maybe a few new skills of his own.

If you're tasked with teaching a three-time Formula One champ to drive, what's the curriculum? {GPwizard - original post}

From what I've heard, Nelson has been sent to driving school for both speeding and parking offences. If it were me:

08:30 - getting to know you session. Impromptu autograph session to be forestalled by using a whole-group verbal icebreaker about why everyone is there
09:00 - Discussion: what is the purpose of using a road? (Correct answer: to get from A to B in such a way as to allow everyone else to do the same).
09:30 - Parking theory. Pit-lane metaphors may help for the basics, but also introduce such concepts as time-limited parking and using mirrors to avoid being in anyone else's way.
10:30 - Practise parking in the car park. Carry on until lunch, or everyone can figure out how to park in an appropriate place and way forwards and backwards. Anyone damaging a car automatically fails.

2:00 (after lunch) - speed theory. With reference to the 9am discussion, explain that the correct speed to use is the one that is safe for the road, other users, the speed limits on signs and allows for anticipation. I.e. not above the speed limit! Also explain the benefits of going slowly (e.g. less stress, easier to spot things that suddenly get in the way).
2:30 - speed practise. Simulated journey around the car park, giving (generous) target times to arrive at particular points in the car park. Random hazards to be added at various times, as well as "police". Carry on until everyone can travel at a safe speed without worrying - or it's too dark to continue.

ESPN is running an advert for their NASCAR Busch Series coverage over here. It has the drivers sitting in a Driver's Education class:

Instructor: "What's the proper distance to maintain between you and the car in front of you at highway speed?"

Driver: "Three feet."

Instructor: "Correct. Oh, you mean three seconds."

Driver: "Nobody gets three seconds in front of me!"
