You have a good point about Schumcher, SR. the same thing happened to basketball over here with Micheal Jordan. During his playing year, attendence and TV ratings for the National Basketball League (NBA) soared. Following Jordan's retirement, they dropped like a rock. LIke F1 for the past few years, many of the new fans came for Micheal and not the sport. Fortunatly, unlike the NBA, F1 has a large base of loing time, die hard fans. (Like us ;))

For many reasons, this has been one of the most polarizing seasons in the history of the sport. Hopefully, these wounds will quickly heal.

I don't really agree about people supporting a team for nationality reasons. Ferrari has always been supported by passionate enthusiasts from all over the world and it doesn't seem to matter who is driving for them.
Is Renault a French team or a Britsish team (French owner, British based team. drivers from two different countries).
I think some people follow a driver (I'm a Jenson Button fan and would continue to be whatever car he drives) and others follow a particular team or car Manufacturer.
This year, the problem has been the FIA and not really the teams or the drivers. Even the issues between Ferrari and McLaren could have been reduced if the FIA had handled the situation better.
