interesting little bit about JS and advertising

I find it interesting that Sir Jackie was inspired by Arnold Palmer, and used his management firm. Palmer’s personal popularity is credited for the rise of golf as a sport in the 1960’s. Golf tournaments were overrun with “Arnie’s Army.”

In much the same way, Stewart’s personal popularity, during and after his driving career, did much for the growth in popularity of F1. He has certainly done as more for the growth, health and wellbeing of F1 as Max and Bernie combined.

When Max insists we need superlicenses to post here you are in trouble for that remark. :fool:

I guess the serious answer is that JYS had the intelligence to look outside his own sport and learn lessons from other fields.  You have to wonder how many drivers over the last 20 years have learned from other fields or even thought about learning like that.  You get the impression with some of them that they don't know anything else exists.

One thing the current generation should thank him for is their earnings.  It was JYS and Rindt who started forcing up driver earnings.  Teams had always played one top driver off against another but the two of them got together and agreed if one was talking to a team about a drive the other wouldn't.  They made it clear to team owners that they knew that the team couldn't sign the other driver so the team either paid up or the driver would go elsewhere.
