Super Aguri Roars Back!
« on: February 14, 2008, 03:50:34 PM »
Super Aguri has rejoined the F1 testing season at Jerez. Despite having missed the entire testing season up until now, the team has finished each of the first three days ahead of at least one of the Hondas. In fact, the mid-day times for today, 14 Febuary (Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!) Ant Davidson was ahead of di Grassi's Renault, Hulkenburg's Williams and Wurz's Honda.

We may soon be talking podiums! :yahoo:

"One swallow does not make a summer". At least I very much hope not.

As much as I admire SA and Anthony they can't duff up their big brother a second year can they?   No No... unthinkable surely?

Unless Honda are sandbagging (unlikely) or are avoiding any sort of testing that would test the car's ultimate speed (quite possible, albeit pointing to possible problems elsewhere), then it is entirely possible for Super Aguri to be faster than Honda.

I've just thought of a really good solution to the customer car problem - Honda give Aguri Suzuki the factory and the staff from the A-team, and make their B-team their only entry. That would seem to be the most sensible move in performance terms...

Latest news and rumors:

From CNN Money:

http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/marketwire/0374247.htm

Quote
SUPER AGURI F1 TEAM has appointed Proxim Wireless as the official wireless networking supplier.

Proxim Tsunami QuickBridge® wireless bridges were used during the Formula One season, providing a bridge between the SUPER AGURI F1 TEAM pits and the server truck, which is usually parked some distance away. These easy-to-install QuickBridge products proved reliable and robust throughout the season, which led the SUPER AGURI F1 TEAM to choose to deploy the Proxim ORiNOCO AP-4000 Access Points this year.

Translation: "They gave us the stuff."

Seveeral sources are reporting that the money behind Magma came from Dubai International Capital (DIC). This is the same firm that tried and failed to buy a piece of the Liverpool footie club. The amount of support for SAF1 is said to be $70m a year over five years.

Some rumors say that ties to Honda may be cut and that the team will build its own cars in future. Other speculation says that Team Manager Daniel Audetto may get the ax, that Aguri-san himself may be replaced by Martin Leach or David Richards, and that the entire team may be rebranded.

Officially, the team is keeping mum on the acquisition until it is completed. "We will not be making any further comment or announcement until that time," said Emma Bearpark, SAF1's Media Communications Manager.

How am I supposed to take seriously any announcement by someone with the surname "Bearpark"?  It is bad enough when these media people claim unpronounceable anagrams of Polish words but when they start inventing names that actually mean something, I have to despair.

And don't you dare come back with some nonsense about this being the Berkshire branch of the famous Bearpark family.  I don't believe it.

Anyone remember Michael Yentob who rose through the ranks of the BBC in the eighties and nineties (might still be there, for all I know)?  I mean, how obvious is that?  The name is clearly Botney...

In point of fact, I take Emma Victoria Bearpark very seriously. She's about the most straightforward and accessible press officers in all of F1. F.Y.I, she was born in London and lives in Oxfordshire. And don't worry too much about her surname. It's about to change. She's marrying GP2's press officer, Will Buxton.

Buxton, now there's a good, sensible surname.  Bearpark indeed.

And yes, you're right, Steven - I was thinking of Alan Yentob (Botney).

A final word: Cozzie says SA roar back, Dare suggests purr back.  Judging by the first day of practice in Melbourne, it's more a case of sputtering back...  ;)
