Little Rascals Actress Dies
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:41:36 AM »
Former child actress Mollie Mae Gottschalck Barron, who was one of the girls who played Darla in the "Little Rascals" (originally "Our Gang") film series, died Wednesday at a Pascagoula hospital. She was 87.

Barron, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., who died Wednesday, was the daughter of two vaudeville performers. She landed the role in "Little Rascals," which was also known as "Our Gang," after another child actress became ill.

Barron made two "Rascals" films, including "The Haunting Ghost," and several short films during the mid-1920s. She later became ill with chicken pox and subsequently lost her hearing, and her acting career ended.

Some believe there was a curse on the cast members.

Carl "Alfalfa" Switzer was shot to death in 1959 at age 33 in an argument over money. Froggy, aka Bill Laughlin, died instantly when he was hit by a truck while riding a motorcycle in 1948. He was 16. Robert Hutchins, who played Wheezer, died in a plane crash in 1945. He was 19.

Robrt "Micky" Blake's legal issues are well known. Norman "Chubby" Chaney died at age 22. According to some fan Web sites, even the dog, Pete, was poisoned by an unknown assassin.

She was preceded in death by husband T.H. Barron. Survivors include one son, Don Frederick Barron of Pascagoula, and six grandchildren.

“You can search the world over for the finer things, but you won't find a match for the American road and the creatures that live on it.”
― Bob Dylan
