DAVID COULTHARD is to sign a new £1.5million deal with Red Bull Racing.

Mirror Sport exclusively revealed yesterday that the Scot moved closer to a deal after his performances killed of Juan Pablo Montoya's chances of a switch from McLaren.

An announcement is expected within two weeks. And Red Bull team boss Christian Horner declared: "I have made no secret of my admiration for David.
"He is an exceptional driver and, when he is motivated and performing, he is one of the best in the world.

"He is tremendously fit and, let's not forget, Nigel Mansell and Damon Hill were older than he was when they won their world championships."

The 35-year-old is Britain's highest points-scoring driver on the F1 circuit.

And he has enjoyed a renaissance in his career since teaming up with privateers Red Bull Racing, which is owned by drinks billionaire Dietrich Mateschitz.

In fact, he has been largely responsible for their rise to prominence.

Horner even went so far as to jump naked into a swimming pool after the Scot won a bet to score the team's first podium at the Monaco Grand Prix in May.

Coulthard has won 13 Grands Prix and openly expressed his desire to stay with the team after they collared McLaren design genius Adrian Newey in a shock £3m deal.

British boffin Newey is one of the most successful engineers in the motor sport's history and has penned every one of Coulthard's winning cars.
