Automotive photographer, journalist and former race car driver Denise McCluggage writes a column for AutoWeek. Sometimes it is what she calls an "Accidental column," a series of short, random thoughts on autos and racing. Here are a few from he latest:

Quote
Formula One is setting records that are meaningful mostly to English speakers. Lewis Hamilton became the first of his race to win a race, and Robert Kubica is the first Pole to win a pole.

Think of tall wheels, say 20 inches and up, as the high heels of the car world. They are aesthetically compelling but kinesthetically hard on the bod. Devotees of high wheels or high heels accept discomfort for good looks.

What say we just forget horsepower altogether? The number is basically meaningless, particularly to a speed-limited U.S. driver. Listed horsepower is primarily for bragging rights (and rites). In the real world, what we need to know about a car is its power-to-weight ratio. That's an index figure with flexible application--a monster SUV with 435 hp or a Lotus 7 with 135. And torque--include that. Maybe fuel-tank capacity. Turning radius . . .

The world knows by now that I love diesels. But please, no more V10s (VW Touareg) that do no better than 20 mpg. Reduce the weights of vehicles and/or add hybrid technology. Pricey, yes, but don't keep embarrassing Dr. Rudolf and me.

“You can search the world over for the finer things, but you won't find a match for the American road and the creatures that live on it.”
― Bob Dylan
