A Mercedes-Benz McLaren supercar has set the land speed record for central London – hitting 175.7mph at City Airport.
The £317,500 car managed to clock up the top speed during a high-adrenaline supercar challenge against a Ford GT, Porsche 911 and a Corvette Z06 among others.
And the new London Land Speed Record, as recorded by adjudicators from the Guinness Book of Records, means it becomes the fastest production car ever driven legally in the capital.
The McLaren narrowly pipped the Ford GT, which hit a top speed of 174mph on the stretch of runway, while the Corvette recorded a top speed of 167mph.
Steve Sutcliffe, of Autocar who arranged the event, told the BBC: "The McLaren has the power, the technology and the stability to hit those high speeds with incredible control.
"This is the fastest any production car has ever been driven legally in London."
The cars were sent hurtling down a section of runway closed to normal air traffic, after a rolling start.
However, it was as much a test of braking as of speed, as the runway ended in a dock.
