F1 going backwards?
« on: July 20, 2006, 09:09:28 PM »
Over the last few months we have seen some technical improvements to F1 cars by way of 'flexi wings' and now mass dampers, (see The Stigs post), both of which have been banned.

With the proposed engine freeze just around the corner and the FIA banning every idea teams put forward are we not in a rather flat state of development? F1 is the accolade of motorsport and has only stayed that way through technological advances many of which have now filtered down onto our every day cars.

I personally do not want F1 to go the same way as most other racing formats with every car being identical and the only thing the teams are allowed to do is 'tweak' the aerodynamics and hopefully the driver has lost a few pounds during the week to give them an advantage.

F1 to me is about advancement, and don't get me wrong F1 cars need tweaking probably more than any, but the major advances of sequential gearboxes and traction control etc were developed before restrictions imposed. The FIA should at least allow teams to try a new component or idea and see if it is an advantage or not. Many advances in F1 turn out to be completely the opposite!

Come on FIA, lets keep the No.1 in Formula 1.
