BMW Sauber may have got away with its vertical wings mounted on the nose of the car in France but the FIA has now moved to ban the ugly appendages. The sport's governing body is less interested in aesthetics and more in concerns that the wings may impair the driver's vision.
BMW first sprouted the wings in testing at Jerez prior to the French Grand Prix, although they only made a brief appearance. At Magny Cours they were out in full force -- the aero devices are apparently designed to channel the air more efficiently to the rear of the car.
Several other teams were speculated to be investigating the idea but the FIA has now written to all 11 teams and said that unless it can be demonstrated to officials that the wings do not impair the driver's vision they will no longer be permitted.
BMW motorsport director Mario Theissen said the wings "presented a new aero solution within the rules," but the team accepted the FIA's ruling to ban them. "The knowledge we gained from this will be included in our future development programmes," Theissen added.
