Absinthe is now legal here in the States, as long as it contains no thujone. Most of the uproar about it in the early 20th century sprang from the larger temperance movement.

It's very high in alcohol, about 180 proof! I think it tastes rather like Jägermeister.

I first had it at The Old Absinthe House in the Vieux Carré of New Orleans. It's quite a bar. It celebrated its 200th birthday last year!
