Attending the Silverstone weekend
« on: December 03, 2008, 08:18:06 PM »
We will be attending the race weekend at Silverstone this year.

We have a place to stay, thanks to a friend we met here at Indy for the USGP a few years ago.

We are familiar with London and have done most of the tourist things there.
I have a step-daughter who attended the American High School at High Wycome in the mid 1990s when I was stationed (Navy) in Italy and so spent some time in the London area.

We will spend a few days on each side of the race weekend touring a bit though and are open to suggestions regarding what we should see and do.

I'm lucky for many reasons, none the least of which is having a wife who enjoys F1.  She is already working on airline tickets to the East side of 'the pond' and car rental.

What?  A wife that enjoys F1?  Hold on to her tight, John - I'd be happy if mine just enjoyed going for a spin in a car for no other reason than driving...

I'd suggest seeing Donington if possible. Not so much to figure out how to get round the car ban they're putting in place for next Grand Prix as to look round their F1 museum. I've not been there myself yet, but I've heard it's fantastic.

Congratulations, J.Clark. Hope you enjoy the trip. Like you, I've been left without a race since the the Evil Troll killed the USGP. I'd put in for tickets to Montreal next season, but that's gone now, too.

Definitely fit in a visit to the Donington collection.  It is only about an hour (ish) from Silverstone and well worth the drive.  Like all car museums it is a cold place so dress like you were outside.

Yep - we used to go to both the Canadian and US GPs and now we have nothing here.

Congrates on the impending trip.

I have found that on two separate occasions when booking a UK vehicle rental from Canada , I have had good luck with Woods Car Rental.

Both times when I rented a smaller car, when I showed up to pick it up, I was upgraded for no extra charge to a much more luxurious car.
May have been just good fortune,or maybe I just am a very fortunate guy.

Oh, by the way, my wife also enjoys F1 and watches all the races with me. But due the times, I tape them all and watch at our convenience later that evening.

Since I work in the Imperial War Museum in London I'd highly recommend it :DD

Seriously though Donington is great, and some of the London museums have F1 displays at various times, so that is worth checking, especially around the British GP.  East Anglia is a nice place to drive to, some quieter sea-side places plus Norwich itself, well worth visiting for a while if you have a car.  I went to uni there and loved it as a place to be in.

The London Science Museum has a display of applications of F1 technology which will be running for quite a long time. I believe it will be there on British GP weekend.

Yeah, I was thinking of that exhibition.  Not been to it yet though, I get a bit 'museumed' out with the day job!

Another good day out is Duxford airfield a bit to the South of Cambridge beside the M11 motorway.

Duxford is the Imperial War museum flight section and has amongst other things state of the art buildings crammed with US combat planes at one end of the site and British combat and civil planes at the other end.

In between there are many hangers and exhibits of combat and commercial planes. There is also an extensive tank and land warfare exhibit.
