I had an '83 VW Rabbit GTI that stayed with me for 412,000 over 12 years without ever opening the transmission or engine (don't ask about electrical problems).  I still miss that car.  17 minutes from our place in Jasper to clicking in your bindings on the ski hill.  Only charged with careless driving once when I passed a bunch of off-duty police who were also  on their way up to ski.  I found out afterward that 'off-duty' doesn't actually mean off-duty.  They couldn't clock me because they were in a private car without a certified speedometer.  I ended up with a ticket for $75 because I was the owner of the vehicle (since they couldn't catch me, they also couldn't prove I was driving).  I had Nokia snow tires if you can believe it, and it rode on rails through the snow.  I only stuffed it once in a 4ft drift that had covered the road on a windy night, but didn't damage anything.  I was probably going about 15kph since I couldn't see a thing.

What's your Yugo got on it, Cos?  I bet some of you guys have some stories of cars you were as fond of as your family over the years.

The Yugo's got a little over 200,000 on it. It had it's 10th birthday last year. The 1st 120,000 went on in its first couple of years when it was my company car. It went to most of the US from mid Texas east.

My company vans usually got about 250,000 to 300,000 on them in 2 1/2 years. they then got handed down through the in-state service dept. Some of them were then donated to local non-profits. I know of one from the early 90's that is still in use as a church bus. It's got to have over 500,000 on it by now.

By the way, I hope to have Broz (my Yugo) back on the road by spring. We're using the opportunity to strengthen the unibody & repair some rust.

It's white, with red pinstripes and a tan interior. For the first year or so, they were only available in red, white and blue.

I got mine for free. The boss got it to try as a company car. He assigned it to me as a joke, since I'm the tallest guy in the outfit. I loved it from the start. When it was totally depreciated for tax purposes, he gave it to me. It has more driver's seat room than my Taurus. It even has more room between the seat back & steering wheel than my full size Ford van.
