Bombers - 50 years on
« on: March 17, 2009, 08:48:35 PM »
The legend started with the mighty Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress, and ends—for now—in the B-52 Stratofortress.

50 Years of beautiful destruction on two wings flying together in a very rare picture.

Good one, Wizzo. They are both great aircraft. The B-52B entered service in 1955. The last one, an H model, was delivered in 1962. The plane in the picture is an H.

There's a joke among bomber crews - Years from now, when the last of the B-2 Stealth bombers are mothballed, their crews will ride home in B-52's. ;)

The Air Force has a program to have current aircraft fly at air shows with their historic predecessors. They call them "Heritage Flights." Here's a pix of the one from our air show last year. It's an F-16 Fighting Falcon from the Air Force's Viper East Demo team, together with Jim Hagedorn's WW 2 vintage P-51 Mustang. The previous owner of the Mustang was NASCAR team owner Jack Roush.
