Will Teams need to run shorter stints on Soft tyres
« on: March 29, 2009, 08:24:57 PM »

The Melbourne race has shown how difficult it is to run for more than 9 or 10 laps on the soft compound tyres. Ferrari started going backwards at the end of the first stint on Softs, and then first Williams then Red bull, and possibly Jens, were off the pace at the end in less than a dozen laps.

I wonder what the strategists in the teams are going to do in forthcoming races as the difference between the Soft and Medium is now so great once the Soft has let go. This may give rise to low fuel qualifying so they can get the grid advantage even though they have to stop so much earlier because of Softs on the first stint.  :DntKnw:

Maybe it will liven Quali up. Anyone else got any thoughts on this?

I was thinking just that:  light fuel start, grippy tires and an early pit stop to set strategy for the rest of the race.

If there's a safety car on the first corner, then the car doesn't have to turn any competition laps in the tires before they disintegrate.

It just shows how stupid the idea of running 2 such different compounds is.  You have to wonder how we got to a situation where to show environmental credentials we have a company that ships tyres half way round the globe for most of the races and paints green strips on them.  The tyres then last less than ten minutes and then make the driver look stupid.

also shows up the nonesense of restricting the supply of F1 tyres to a single supplier.

when teams were able to have different tyre manufacturers it brought another interesting factor into the overall mix and kept the manufacturers on their toes to make a superior tyre.

bring back qualifying tyres and to hell with cutting costs on such an essential element of motor racing

plenty of fat elsewhere to trim costs especially the largesse of PR promotions and no-expense-spared 'hospitality' to all the celebs and VIPs

trim that, not the tyre budget.

Is this tire problem a early season problem or
will the soft tires be improved as the season
goes on
