Schu: F1 harder for Ralf

Michael Schumacher doesn’t believe that his enormously successful career made it easier for brother Ralf to succeed in Formula 1.

The younger Schumacher made his debut for Jordan in 1997 at a time when Michael had already established himself as the sport’s pre-eminent star with two world titles.

When asked in an interview with German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung on Friday if he had made his brother’s life easier by blazing a trail in F1, Schumacher Sr admits his early career achievements opened up doors for Ralf.

But the retired legend argues that the 30-year-old Toyota driver had to face difficulties that he never encountered in the sport.

“A more carefree life? I am sure Ralf wouldn’t agree with that,” he said.

“When I became successful in Formula 1 there were new opportunities for him as well.

“But that doesn’t mean he had it easier as a driver in Formula 1.

“Ralf had to overcome different hurdles, for example people’s expectations.

“He couldn’t be quite so relaxed.

“I am sure it was more difficult for him than it was for me.”

And when asked if he was serious in his views, the 37-year-old insisted: “Of course you can argue that Willi Weber [manager] and me and paved his way and supported him.

“But at the end of the day he had to prove himself and face his critics alone.”
