Cosworth F1 Record
« on: November 10, 2009, 01:30:04 PM »
I found a brief record of Cosworth's record in F1.

In four decades of F1 competition Cosworth engines have delivered a powerful set of figures:   176 race wins - second only to Ferrari – including every race in the 1969 and 1973 seasons, enough for triple consecutive drivers championships at the start of the 1980s, the first for Michael Schumacher in 1992 and the most recent in 2003 for Giancarlo Fisichella. 10 Constructors’ Championships – including the legendary Lotus performances of the 1960’s and 70’s, and Williams’ first consecutive championships in 1980 and 81. 13 Drivers’ Championships – for great names including as Jim Clark, Jackie Stewart, Mario Andretti, Nelson Piquet and Michael Schumacher.

There is only 1 Cosworth.

I agree.  I have no idea why anyone is saying Cosworth might be a bad engine next year.  With 4 customers, maybe 5, they are certainly working harder at the moment than any other engine manu on making sure their engines are going to be top notch.  Just because they haven't been in F1 for a few years doesn't mean they don't know how to do it.

Cosworth kicked butt in the Grid Game, no reason to think they won't in F1.   :P :P

....and they are back for 2010.  :yahoo:

Second only to Ferrari. You never know with 4 maybe 5 teams they can catch up? :tease:

The reason why Cosworth's engine will probably be bad next year is simple. It's being forced to modify a 2006 unit to fit the 2010 regulations, and the 2006 unit was hardly classic Cosworth. Its one major virtue was its capacity for high revs... ...which are now capped at 3k below its capabilities. It also can't produce an engine better than what already exists due to the regulations, even if the 2006 unit does prove to have development in it.

In 2013 I expect Cosworth to be a force to be reckoned with. Until then the regulations prevent that from happening.

Why are they being forced to modify a 2006 model?  Why can't they design a new one based on the 2009/2010 regs?

Cost I would suspect. Developing a new engine would eat up much more than the money they can charge customers under the contract they tendered for.
