You have to wonder how any of the drivers survived racing cars like that on circuits like that.  600bhp, drum brakes on thin hard tyres.  Incredible.

The Auto unions were apparently even worse. Yes I agree you have to take your hats off to the aces that drove those monsters.

Real men, with hairs on their chests.

And they didn't complain about not having run off areas.
