Wow!  :swoon:  Rather you than me Dare, - at our age I definitely dislike hangovers.  ;)

I guess if one drinks enough one could even be tempted to sit on the porch and watch the storm clouds gathering.  :D

The liquor store warning just misses Dare in Louisville. My home of Lancaster, however, is right in the middle of it. I'm off to prepare. Better safe than sober sorry, you know!

When you started this topic Dare I first thought you'd posted a joke in the wrong place, then I heard it was a real bad hurricane. The best of luck to you all on that side of the pond.

On hindsight maybe I shouldn't have posted that graph but a little
humor may ease the tensions[at least for me it does]

We've got a high wind warning from noon today through 18:00 tomorrow. Sustained winds of 40 mph with gusts up to 70 mph. Rain and snow throughout the period. I may be reporting later from Munchkin Land in Oz.

Windy, cold and snowing this morning. They still have the high wind warnings up through 18:00 tonight, but it looks like we got off easy. Like Lonny said, they have up to 2 feet of snow across the river in WV. Many power outages over there, too.

I just heard that 8 of the subway tunnels under the East River between Manhattan and Brooklyn/Queens have flooded with salt water. It may be days before they can be reopened. The New York Stock Exchange will be closed for a second day, the first two day closer since the 1880's.

7 million homes without power.  Queens NY burning.  Parts of NJ under 45ft water, 7 subway tunnels filled with salt water, and a 30 ton crane hanging by its cables 30 stories up about 3 blocks from a friends place in midtown east.

It's a lot worse than most expected.  :(

I know you can't pick out any one instance, but in that terrible Breezey Point fire where all those homes were destroyed by fire, the reporter said there was a couple who had lived there for 24 years were sifting through the ashes looking for mementoes from their home, nothing at all remained, heartbreaking.

It makes me think of the years I lived in NYC. Like the governor of New York said, they seem to be having a 100 year storm every couple of years now.

I just heard of one problem I hadn't thought of. They were taking about pumping the water out of the various tunnels and such. They have to pump it clear out into the harbor or it will just drain down into some other tunnel.

My uncle(he taught me how to drive) in Long Island says they were not as badly effected like people's in Queens, he has not electricity disruption or water shortage, but my aunt in Pennsylvania was badly effected and have to move to my other aunty in Delaware. I am yet to know about other relatives, hopefully they have all manage to survive this carnage.

My uncle was discharged from the hospital just before two days before the storm struck due heart disease, talk about bad timing, could think worse than that.

I hope our GPW member's family who live in that region will be able to stay away from every bit of trouble..

And remembrance to those life who was taken away the storm, R.I.P for each of them.

I think there is a huge amount of underestimating repair times and costs for the subway system on the south side of Manhattan in particular.  It was flooded with salt water, which will have destroyed virtually everything electric in the system.  I expect the parts of the subway that are effected will take months to repair and bring back online.  Good luck everyone living below 20th street or so.  They had better first go and paint some bus-only lanes through that area or they may as well close down Wall St, Tribeca and Battery Park.

Staten Island seems to be the borough with the least help, but the most damage.  The 'forgotten borough' is how some have referred to it.  Manhattan has the cash to fix itself up, but Staten Island is in a bad way.

But wasn't it the same with hurricane Katrina and New Orleans, the rich areas got sorted first and the poor: ie Hispanic and black areas got forgotten, ignored.

I just saw that the Staten Island Ferry is running again. It connects Staten Island to Manhattan, docks at South Ferry (Battery Park). The trouble will be that it connects to the #1 subway line, and who knows when it will be running down through there again.

Staten Island has always gotten short shrift in NYC.

They've also just postponed the New York Marathon that was scheduled for Sunday.

They've also just postponed the New York Marathon that was scheduled for Sunday.

It's about time.  They should have killed it as soon as the storm was predicted to hit NYC.  Pretty late call for anyone coming from another country to run (last year there were 3 guys from our little Swiss village who did the marathon).  They have to go early to acclimatize and be well rested.

The hotels are also probably in total chaos with so many people in lower Manhattan without power still - I'm sure tons of them moved into hotels.  Running the marathon with Manhattan in such a state would have been very selfish and stupid of the organizers.  If they had not waited until the last second, they could have held the run in upstate NY in any of a hundred smaller towns who would have loved to host everyone.  But now they've made the call so late, there is no chance.  Bloomberg should tell the organizers to take a hike and come back next year.  Runners don't bring much to the local economy anyhow.  They're usually cheapskates.

Mayor Bloomberg wanted to go ahead with the race, but was bullied out of it by other politicians. He thought it would be a symbol that the city couldn't be beaten. He's the main reason why it wasn't cancelled earlier.
