Title: What can we expect from Renault in 2019?
Post by: Calman on December 30, 2018, 08:53:11 AM
Here comes the hype ahead of the 2019 campaign.  How close can Renault bid to close the gap to the top 3 and will this be music to the ears of neutral fans?

Maybe Danny Ric will find that teethy grin again, but how long 'til we see it???

What if Renault gains slightly, or even just maintains pace, and RBR-Honda takes a step back.

Is it still 'progress' if Renault wins third?  Or do the investors see it as a gift?

I personally think that Renault will make solid gains in 2019, and win some races by being ready to take advantage of bad luck in the top teams.

I expect Renault to catch and maybe surpass Red Bull. I think it will be more a case of RBR-Honda going backwards than Renault going forward. Investors tend to be bottom line oriented, so Renault's final standing should be all that matters to them.

Personally, I would love to see Renault do well in 2019.   I also hope Danny Ric finds success in some shape or form, but, it would be nice to see the Hulk on the podium again, so I sincerely hope that opportunity comes along in 2019.

Cal :)

Agree with every word of this Cal.....huge Dan Ric fans and as we're off to the Australian GP we're excited to see him in his first race for Renault (maybe we'll see him at last day of Barcelona Testing too!)

I believe that Renault will be fighting with mclaren for 4th in the constructors along with haas, however I feel like when the Honda engine breaks down or Red Bull suffer with reliability, Renault could snatch a podium or two with mclaren just behind, what do you think?

First of all, welcome aboard Aceredbull69!!  :good:

Either way, I'd love to see both Renault and McLaren compete near the front, but not sure if that's over optimistic in 2019.  I feel that Williams are now the team with a long road back, just as McLaren were the past few seasons.

Cal :)

[Thank you very much Cal I’m just finding my way around, I agree that mclaren fighting at the front could be unrealistic and as for Williams, they’re a great team but I cannot understand under paddy Lowe why the 2018 car was not aerodynamically efficiencient, Does Claire Williams need to be replace do you think? As for Renault as a constructor and good funding, with talented people at enstone, they should be fighting in the next 5 seasons I imagine  :DD

As I said in another thread, I think it will be a 3 level series. Mercedes and Ferrari at the top; then R/B, Renault and Haas; then the rest. R/B may be a bit quicker than Renault and Haas, but I doubt Honda has solved all their reliability problems. R/B might not even be quicker, Honda was the least powerful engine last year and will still be the slowest again this year.

Where do you think Mclaren will fair, do you think it will be mclaren and Williams fighting at the back/midfield? Do you think that Renault could score a podium this season?

I have a feeling that McLaren may move forward in 2019, more convincingly than Williams.  Let's face it, McLaren have had 3-4 years of pain, Williams really just fell to the bottom of the jar in 2017/18.

I still have a question mark over Toro Rosso, but expect HAAS, Racing Point and Renault to be fairly strong ... after the "top 3" .. which surely will be Mercs, Ferraris and RB's again???

Oh Yes, don't forget Alfa Romeo, they could be the dark horse of 2019, especially once Kimi rings it's MWAH-NECK!!!!

Best Regards,
Cal :)

Williams have the benefit of the Mercedes engine though.  I know I am biased, but I do feel if they can get the aerodynamics working at any level, then they will perform well and have to at the very least look at Racing Point as a benchmark.  I am hopeful that now Lowe has had a purge (de Beer, Wood etc all having left the team) you would hope he has technical people around him he trusts.

McLaren have dragged around the back for a few years now with Honda and now Renault and I do not see a sudden shift forward, especially without Alonso to drag extra speed out of the car.  One thing is for certain, I expect this year to be hugely tight in the midfield.  They do have some great people and James Key ought to be a decent appointment, but his impact won't be felt for another year at least due to his gardening leave.  I would have expected more though from Prodromou and the aerodynamics on the car.  The deficiencies there have really surprised me.  With Williams it has been an issue for many seasons, but McLaren have someone who is supposedly one of the top guys in that field.

McLaren's problems are structural and managerial.  They are still operating how top teams used to operate in the 1990s and early 2000s.  While that was a much better era of Formula 1 for a plethora of reasons, it's no longer possible to run a Formula 1 team in the manner which was appropriate for that time, but McLaren still, to my mind, has not realised this.  All of this has resulted in its ongoing poor performance.

As for Renault, the team has a lot to do to get back to the days of challenging for wins and world championships.  I don't see it happening this year.  I reckon that a distant fourth in the constructors' championship is the most likely result, assuming the engine is reliable.

I reckon  Alfa Romeo Racing will surprise a lot of people and not because of Antonio Giovanazzi but instead from the kimster, I believe that he will score consecutive top 6 finishes due to his experience and his ability of improving the car. But I think we should just leave him alone because he knows what he’s doing 😂😂 Renault vs Alfa will be interesting

Howdy, Aceredbull69! Good to have you here.

I think that Alfa could be the biggest surprise of the year. We know that they have a much bigger budget. I suspect that they will also have a lot more direct help from Ferrari. Add Kimi to that mix and they could well be mixing it up with Haas, RBR & Renault.

Hi Aceredbull69 (can we assume the numbers are either your age or birth year?  ;)

I’m hoping for big movements from Renault and Alfa.  Only another month will tell.  I think Ferrari will fight Merc for top steps, while Renault will be consistently 3rd without luck, and hopefully take a win or two when luck blows their direction.  Biggest loser will be RBR who will struggle with the Honda and then Max’s frustrations will take them into retirement more often than they finish.  I hope the midfield is a thick fight all season long.
