For a guy who has had to deal with what he has over the past (what, 10 years?), he still plays cautiously optimistic really well. Imagine a Max or Lewis in his position.

I never thought Alonso would have had this
much patience. If he told them to stick it who could
blame him. After his Renault years his career has been
one big disappointment.

I think it's time for Fernando to enjoy a good night out with a select few drivers on the grid (recent past/present) and discuss "what could have been!" ... may be good for the soul???

Patience is something which can be bought. He's probably been told more than once he's being paid to be the face of the company, and if he doesn't like it, he can give the money back.

Certainly a fat bank account helps with that too. If he was at Ferrari or Mercedes or even RBR, he wouldn't have had his shots at Indy and LeMans. He might get upset in the car, and dream of greener pastures, but off track he's got to know that the opportunities at McLaren might not include a WDC, but do include many other benefits I'm sure he's enjoying.
Besides, for ego: what does he accomplish winning a single championship at Ferrari or Mercedes? It won't bring him on par with Hamilton or Vettel. Winning a championship for RBR or Mercedes would put him as a historic footnote, how's that for his ego? Winning at McLaren, after their drought, would be huge though. Big enough that when he cools down after the race, it's a nice goal to have.

Alonso must be proud of that 2 car LeMans win
If Alonso is so caught up in capturing Le Mans and Indy
I'm sure he'd like to have a few more WDC's by his name.

I think that Alonso will be spending next summer driving for McLaren, but on this side of the pond. I do agree that he will always be one of the great "what if" discussions in the history of F1.
