Title: McLaren Says they Don't Want a Title Sponsor
Post by: cosworth151 on January 10, 2018, 02:07:49 PM
McLaren executive director Zak Brown says that the team doesn't want a title sponsor.

"When have you ever written, 'Lewis Hamilton in the Petronas Mercedes'? You call it the Mercedes. So I think all that does is kind of cloud your own brand and doesn't deliver huge value to that [other] brand, so what I do want to sell is title level branding.

"I'm open minded because [if] someone said, 'Not for any money?!' Well, yes! I'm not saying we won't, it's just not our preferred route. We're more of a business model of a principal partner, a primary, a co-primary, major and associates."

Right. And I really didn't want to hit that half-billion dollar lottery, either. All of that money would have been soooooo gauche.

When teams like Red Bull and Mercedes are just advertising ventures anyway, I'm sort of surprised when the take on 'title' sponsors.

As for companies that do 'title' sponsorship, Brown is right, their name hardly comes up at all.  It's not like NASCAR where the drivers know where their paycheques come from and let the world know.

The article does sound like sour grapes though.  "If no one wants to sponsor McLaren, it's because we don't want a sponsor"

I'm sure McLaren would want a title sponsor if it would pay the rates it wanted and didn't make excessively onerous demands in return. I suspect it's cutting its nose off to spite its face here.
