After the way RBR has bad mouthed Renault over the past few years, I'm surprised that any engine builder would want to do a deal with them.

Honda thinks Red Bull will badmouth them less than McLaren. There comes a point where even a different tenor of criticism may come as a relief.

RBR whined about the Renaults whenever it suited them.  McLaren were very tight lipped until it was clear that the deal had broken down.  If I was Honda I would stay away from RBR or have an unbreakable zip your lip clause in their contract.

No kidding, McLaren stood by Honda for years to the point where they looked kinda stupid for ignoring the obvious.

Red Bull was blaming Renault despite winning races.  It felt like RBR was trying to get a better engine deal, but ended up pre-emptively burning all their bridges.

Hm... I remember McLaren criticising Honda a lot, especially via Fernando Alonso, on the radio, in public during F1 races.

Last year yes. But before that they were very supportive of the partnership when everyone else could see Honda wasn't up to par.
