Title: Mari Hulman George Dies
Post by: cosworth151 on November 04, 2018, 03:14:47 PM
Mari Hulman George, Chairwoman of the Board Emeritus of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, has passed at the age of 83.

She had a long history in racing. She was co-owner of a top level racing team in the 1950's and 1960's. She was Chairwoman of the Board of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1988 to 2016. She was the daughter of Tony Hulman and the mother of Tony George.

She was also well know for her many philanthropic works. She raised over a million dollars for Indiana Special Olympics. She created a program through which thousands of Indiana school children visited the Speedway each May on complimentary field trips to learn about the connections between education and motorsports. Those field trips continue to this day.

And every Memorial Day Sunday she said, "Ladies & gentlemen, start your engines!"

R.I.P., Ma'am. Our sport is so much better for your works.

Once upon a time the people in the business of motorsport saw the money aspect as a way to further the motorsport aspect.

Too many people are now trying to use motorsport to make money, and it shows.

The world (not just the world of motosport) needs more people, like Hulman George, who do things because it's their passion, not a way to pad their bank account.
