I don't remember what I have read about this, but most likely it was money. Frank was generally of the opinion that the car won races. The driver was just another component you plugged in, so a top driver wasn't worth what you had to pay them. He felt any decent driver could win in a Williams.

We always talk about drivers, comparing their driving styles, wondering how they would do in different eras/situations.  The team owners/principles are the same.  The iron will to create a championship team in one era is an out of touch despot in another.

Williams was the best at spotting and recruiting talent, but a bit of a 'one man show' and had real trouble making the others on his team feel like valuable contributors with a voice.  Chapman could innovate like no one we've seen since, but could he run a clockwork organization like Toto at the current Mercedes F1 team?  I don't know if we've seen more opposite people than Ron Dennis and Zach Brown, but both bring success to another famous name at McLaren.

I read that on racefans too Lonny.  :good:

The biggest thing I take from Damon's story is that luck and timing are everything in Formula One. - Well besides the wonderful cars that is.  :D

F1 is IF backwards as Muddy Talker often reminded us, now IF Damon was not Graham's son; helping get leg up to testing. IF 'our Nige' hadn't gone to America. IF Senna hadn't forced Prost's retirement and then himself died, where might Damon's F1 career have taken him?

More Brabham or Arrows drives is my guess. Have to say though Damon took his chances well and certainly enhanced the Hill legacy.  :good:
