Haas has resigned Shumacher and Mazepin for the 2022 season. No real surprise. As a Haas fan, I'm very happy that the team will still have Mick and a great big pile of fertilizer rubles.

Check out the official picture. Mick sure looks a lot happier than Niki.

This was a first. A regular feature of pre-race TV broadcasts here in the States is having a driver do a lap of the track in the pace car (aka safety car in the rest of the world). Romain Grosjean did it for this past weekend's race at Laguna Seca. He put the pace car into the tire barrier at the entry to the pit lane.

Seriously, Grosjean has become a very popular driver in IndyCar. He finished third at Laguna and got the biggest cheers of anyone on the podium.

He did get a little lesson in American style racing from former NASCAR champ Jimmie Johnson in The Corkscrew:

I'm quite unsure what the governing body want to do as yet another gimmick is indicated. Why they think this is going to attract a new younger audience I really don'y know.

He just doesn't know when to keep his mouth shut.
Mercedes have not made an issue of any possible injury to Hamilton and Hamilton has just said that some stiffness and headaches have got worse so he thinks he should get checked before the next race.
No 'song & dance' yet it could have been so much worse.
But Marko still has to make callous and unnecessary remarks. The Red Bull PR machine must be cringing!

As F1 fans, we really do want 'close hard fought racing'.  That's going to lead to crashes that are 'racing incidents' where fair minded drivers both feel entitled to same piece of race track at the same time.

Other crashes are going to be caused by drivers clearly violating the rules, and it's easy to assign blame.

One problem though is some drivers are very crafty and capable of creating a crash that looks like a racing incident.  Or are willing to get into a 'racing incident' that they could have avoided.

In the spirit of making the policing of these incidents a little more clear cut I had a thought:  if a collision has no clear 'wrong' driver, but clearly someone was wrong, why not assign the penalty to the driver ahead in the standings?

This isn't a hill I'm willing to die on, so feel free to tell me why I'm wrong, or what would work better, but in a situation where Hamilton and Max are fighting for the championship, of course Max benefits from a double knock out, so it's not the same risk for him as it is for Hamilton. If Max were automatically blamed for a crash with Hamilton, he'd think twice about taking those chance.  If the tables turn, then Hamilton will have to think twice.

It encourages passing, because drivers will know the cost of 'closing the door'.  It will keep the championship close, by giving the trailing driver a slight advantage.  It wouldn't just apply to first place either, even the midfield and back enders would have a little more room to make passes.

Ideally it would never come up, but if it does, it's an easy tool for the stewards to use for those types of collisions.

Ricciardo.  As recently as last week, I thought he had zero chance of winning a race this year.  He lucked out a little without having to fight off Max, but I really think he could have done that if he'd had to.

Norris.  If McLaren was going to win, Norris was my pick.  A great second place, a great teammate drive keeping Perez and Bottas at bay.

Bottas.  Starting lastish and getting a podium for a team that has publicly said he's not what they're looking for.  The Mercedes car was the class of the field, and he wielded it like a scalpel cutting through the field.

McLaren.  What a great job to build a winning team over a season where they were struggling to even be 'best of the rest'.

Max.  I'm willing to put the crash up as a racing incident, but on Lap One Max established what a 'fair' amount of space in a corner was (that is to say, none).  Hamilton respected that, backed off.  When the positions were reversed where was the respect?

I agree with Toto, it's a racing incident, but a 'tactical foul'

(I more agree with Damon Hill though.  If anyone knows about losing a championship through being crashed off the track, it's Damon)

Perez.  Everyone knows if you gain a place off the track, you give it back.  Pretending you need permission isn't fair racing.

Haas.  I don't know if the team is falling apart because Gene is losing interest, or Gene is losing interest because the team is falling apart.  Haas really had an opportunity to go with the 'loveable loser' role that Stoddard invented for Minardi, and having Mick is a great way to bring in some fans who want a 'feel good' story.  They just can't seem to get anything right.

I hadn't noticed qualifying was held today instead of the
usual Saturday. Can everyone still update their race picks?
I doubt if anyone would have picked Bottas anyway. Sorry
