Title: Could McLaren be returning to Mercedes power for 2021 F1 season?
Post by: John S on September 27, 2019, 10:19:06 PM
Rumours surfacing again that Macca ready to go back to Mercedes engines for new regs era in 2021.

Could another early season - seemingly off the wall - Eddie Jordan prediction be right yet again?  :swoon:

The BBC are running the same story, so it's probably true.

Yes it's true, even Motorsport magazine have changed the story in the link above to confirm the news.

Only fly in ointment is will FIA agree to Merc supplying another team or will they need to drop either Williams or Racing Point?

The current regs say Manufacturer can only supply 3 teams (incl own team) unless FIA gives dispensation. Mind you 2021 regs may change that.  :DntKnw:

Maybe Williams will be looking for a lower price unit for next season.

Is there not a 5 year agreement with Williams already?

I think it's been established that F1 contracts are not worth the paper they are printed on. The lawyers stuff them with so many exit clauses they are unenforceable. Best case scenario, Merc offers them a buy out that will cover Renault's fees with a bit left over. Or they could do the same to Racing Point, though Wiliiams seems more likely.
