Title: Fuel Strike Threat - Don't Panic!
Post by: Wizzo on June 10, 2008, 05:48:46 PM

Ministers have introduced emergency procedures ahead of a planned four-day strike by tanker drivers to limit the chances of panic buying. It is feared that filling stations could start running out of fuel from the weekend if the pay dispute is not resolved.

Around 500 tanker drivers employed by haulage companies want a 13% pay rise but the claim has been rejected. The companies are the sole suppliers to almost 1,000 Shell forecourts and the workers plan a four-day walkout from Friday.

Business secretary John Hutton has now been forced to order contingency plans to stop panic buying and limit disruption. The measures safeguard fuel for emergency services and allow for supplies to be moved around the country to areas where there are shortages.

The main worry for Mr Hutton is that drivers could picket distribution depots used by other companies and cause a knock-on effect to other supplies. ‘It is difficult to gauge what the impact of the strike would be if it went ahead,’ the Department for Business said. ‘If the strike were to affect other retailers, it would have a more significant impact.'

I don't even know where my nearest Shell garage is (there may be one by the Netto at the other end of town, but if there isn't, the nearest one is at least 10 miles away, probably more). I doubt that we'll even bat an eyelid in this part of Derbyshire.

You don't need a disguise to be a daylight robber.... you just need an oil company shirt.... Mobil, Shell, BP..... etc... you get the idea...

I don't think they are up to date, since it went over $5 in the U.S. and it says it's only $3.45.  I'm surprised Switzerland isn't mentioned since we now pay about 1.5 Euro per litre.

Two days into the strike, and nearly all the stations near me have run out of petrol, despite none of them being Shell (the Netto one turned out to be BP). It's because nobody will cross the picket lines.

That said, when I heard that the lorry drivers had rejected a £7000 pay rise (from an already-respectable £32000) to get to this point, my sympathy evaporated. If I asked for that big a pay rise from my bosses, I'd probably be fired on the spot for excessive greed.
