I voted some time ago. I'm from Lancaster, Ohio, USA, in the foothils of the beautiful Appalachian Mountains. If you have a get-together at the USGP, I know plenty of good watering holes around Indy!

This might be better put up as another string, but has anyone else out there ever raced?

I'm a backwoods Appalachian foothillbilly.  I can get to Cosworth's house in 10 minutes (5 minutes, if there are no police around anywhere).

The last time I actually timed that route was in the 1965 GTO, 389 ci 4 barrel.  The GP doesn't have quite the grasp in the corners, and the Mark VIII - well..... when am I supposed to be at your house again?  You can time me.

I'm in Massive Chew Sets (well, okay, Massachusetts) but I'm not really from there.  Born in England, I was in South Africa from the age of about six weeks until moving to Zimbabwe ten years later.  After 27 years in Africa, I'd had enough and came back to the old country.  Lived in England (Coventry) for 30 years and then moved to Oklahoma.  And now I'm in MA.

Which leaves me with two questions:

Where exactly am I from?

And where the heck will I move next?

:D

I was brought up and lived/worked  in Coventry (and surrounding villages) from the age of 4 until 18 months ago when we were finally able to break free! lol

Although I have almost 40 years of investment in the area - I don't miss it one little bit!

Title: Re: We know where you live.............
Post by: raindancer on July 23, 2007, 06:35:38 AM
I wrote it specifically after watching this race. Unless these guys had the prefect setup they were going all over the place. Button said the track looked like a Lake, Hamilton complained and so did a whole lot of others.

We have seen races in much worse weather and drivers like Senna, Giles, Alesi adapting and driving. This lot of drivers seem to thrive only on ideal conditions.

Hi all - glad to be here with such classy and well-informed F1 fans after being invited when the "Pitlane" forum ceased. Also previous member of the "Grandprixmagazine" forum [as "KIWINOZ"]  but left as too much fanboy and other tripe on it.

I was born in 1943 and grew up in AUCKLAND, New Zealand until my 12th year. Went dairy-cattle farming with family in the neighbouring WAIKATO area and had career stints mainly in WELLINGTON [NZ's capital] where my two sons were born.

Since my marriages ended [2] I have made my home in GOLD COAST, Australia which is the "Florida" of the South Pacific and truly one of the best spots on Earth - a near paradise actually.

It is one of THE tourist spots of the world you must visit before you die and SURFER's PARADISE is one the world's most impressive beach fronts.  :good:

My nic at Pitlane was the same "SennaMan" but at the time I was too busy to ever make a post and the day I wanted to was the day it folded. Was sad about that too but very glad to be invited to GPWIZARD where decent standards of debate and argument are followed and respected. Love the humour too.

hahahaha cosworth151 - i was referring to the climate but the Gold Coast does have the highest ownership of MERCEDES-BENZ cars per head of population in all of Australia.

Most of them are painted black too

Which shows the owners have more cash than class!

[a saying around here is "canal trash" as most of 'em own very conspicuously expensive mansions costing in excess of $8M, on man made canal housing estates]

btw, rom is quite right; the bikini clad chicks are outta this world mate - far too much for a growing lad of 63!

True Florida story:

When I'm working in the Miami area, I stay at a hotel on the strip in Miami Beach. It's one of those good news/bad news situations. Good news - it's right on a clothing optional beach. Bad news - It's right beside a high rise senior citizen retirement center.

Reminds me of one of those mass whale beachings.

I've been lurking around here for a few weeks.  I came over after Pitlane folded (sad), and was really happy to find this site.  Too many of the sites in the US are full of folks who see the world only through red-tinted glasses, so it's nice to read the thoughts of folks with a bit more perspective.  I live in a little village west of Chicago, I was born in this area in 1952, and my favorite place to visit is the UK, so I seem to fit in here pretty well!   ;)

I'm using Jimmy Clark's pic as my avatar as a small tip of the hat to him.  He was the first F1 driver I'd ever heard of, and I was crushed when he was killed.  As a side note, growing up in the American Midwest, we pretty much thought that racing began and ended at Indy, so my interest in "furrin" racing was a bit odd.  I guess it still is.   :yahoo:

Anyway, great site and lots of great discussions.  I'm still pulling for Lewis to win the WDC, but wouldn't be too disappointed if Kimi pulls it off.  I don't think Nando really deserves it, but if he wins at least McLaren pulls something from the ashes this year.

Cheers,

Chris

I'm with you there Dragonbreath, if Lewis does'nt get it I'd like Kimi to be WDC, like you I don't think Alonso deserves it. You want to try the chatroom, loads of banter and mucking about and most importantly, eveyones own opinion on F1.

I don't know if they'll let me upload this pic, but it's the icon I use...I made it one night after Hungary, putting 'Hellboy' (an entertaining movie actually) inside Alonzo's helmet from an F1 Racing wallpaper download.

I sent it back to F1 Racing telling that I had come across Ron Dennis' new wallpaper, but they never replied or put me in the mag.

Hope you enjoy it.

Hey Dragonbreath welcome. Of course we remember you from Pitlane.

I've been watching you logged in here for a while and wondered how long it would be before you joined in.

I'm a total Jim Clark fan too.

Haven't been writing much because I'm so busy on the organisational side of the racing in our part of the world. We have a big event - motorsport festival, this weekend that I'm responsible for.

Welcome aboard, DragonBreath! I was born on an Army post south of Indy and have lived most of my life in southeast Ohio. Dare is from Louisville, KY. Like you, I grew up with Indy, NASCAR and even NHRA drag racing, but F1 quickly became my favorite.

Have you ever been to the USGP at Indy?

Cos

Thanks for the warm welcome!  This site felt like home from day 1.

I went to the USGP at Indy the first, hmmm, three years I guess.  September was a great time for me, since I have a bit more free time, but June is always terribly busy, so I haven't been back.  I'm regreting that now, of course, since we may not get another GP in the Midwest in my lifetime.  Back to Montreal, I guess.

Cos, you and Dare live in some of the best driving areas of the country.  We spent Labor Day weekend in the area around Stockport OH.  The roads there (and you know this already) are truly fantastic, especially for someone from the flats around Chicago.  Two weeks after that we made our annual pilgrimage to Deal's Gap, so I put on a quick 3500 miles, but drove some great roads in the process.

Sorry, I'm getting a bit long-winded in my old age.

Years ago there was a Car and Driver 10 Best Driving Roads in the U.S.  A friend of mine's Dad had a new Fiat X19 that he needed brought down to Kansas where he had recently moved from Ottawa Canada.  We jumped at the chance, but did a massive detour on the way, taking in 7 of those 10 roads, 3 of which were in Ohio...oh, those were the days.

I know Stockport very well. I'm from right near there in Lancaster.

Car and Driver's editorial offices are in Ann Arbor, MI, so they drive down here for road tests. Back in the 80's and 90's, they used to stop regularly at a restaurant in nearby Lauralville. A friend of mine owned the place back then and had pix of the mag staff and some of the cars up in the restaurant.

Strange that you should mention Car and Driver here. I was mentioning it myself with a like minded friend earlier today. Haven't seen a copy in years.

The reason I mentioned it was that I had driven the same Ford GT40 that Ford had built for journalists all over the world to road test. Car and Driver had road tested it as had Road and Track, Motorsport, Autosport, Motoring News - anyone remember it? Autocar, Motor and heaven knows how many others. It was yellow.

After they had finished offering it for road test purposed Ford had sold the car to Willie Green. A girl friend of mine had bought it from Willie, and I used to look after it for her. This would have been 1970, 71. I drove it quite a bit and clearly remember seeing the speedo needle go past the 170 mph mark on a disused airfield one day.

Carol had suggested we do the Targa Florio with it - not quite the ideal car for the Targa, but an opportunity I wasn't going to refuse, that's for sure. Unfortunately her marriage fell apart at about the same time and hubby sold the GT40 back to Willie Green.

On the last weekend of this month we have the Grand Prix de Malte for pre 67 sports cars, and among the entries is a Ford GT40. I am the Clerk of the Course for the event and I have asked the French organiser to introduce me to the owner of the Ford in the hope that I can reaquaint myself with one, and do a road test for our local magazine NITRO.

I was talking just the other day about a C&D cover where they asked the question "So, you always wanted a Ferrari?  Here's how - by a Dodge Hurricaine pick-up and race one for pink slips"...it was that limited edition little pickup that they stuffed a Buick Grand National Supercharged V6 into and went on about a one ton diet (there was a warning sticker saying that it could not withstand more than 500lbs in the bed of the truck - but that was due to a special suspension system).  There was also it's sister, the Plymouth Cyclone.

Wait a minute - I realize my error - it must have been a GMC and Chevy pickup, not Dodge and Plymouth - it's late, I'm confused, and it was in the early 90's I think.

How much is 100 miles converted into kilometres? we don't use miles in my country. Nicky has great homesites (www.nickyhayden.com (http://www.nickyhayden.com)) and i visit there very often. I thought if you have seen him in motorshow near your town. :DntKnw:

It is not so far! I know that in USA distancies are very long. But you have good traffic network there and almost everyone has own car. What age you can get driving licence there? In my country you must be 18 years old.

Dare, 16 years old is rather young to get driver's licence. I have one book written by Fisico and Leo Turrini (journalist) "Ma chi ti ha dato la patente?" (Mondadori) In english: "Who gave you the driver's licence?" It is written only in italian, it took me one week to read that book. Fisico told in that book too when he got driver's licence, he drove too fast and didn't ignore so much about traffic rules. the faster, the better! :tease: Anyway, now he has attended with a project that warns young drivers to drive too fastly in traffic, also keep seat belts. Every death in traffic is useless if it is avoided with right traffic education and own behaviour.

I had my learner's at 15, and got my drivers license a few weeks after I turned 16.  I've had my share of speeding tickets, been hit by more than a few other cars (none serious).  I don't think that waiting until 18 would have made any difference.  As with everything, it depends on the individual, and how mature they behave.  To date I caused one small accident, and although technically it was my fault, I blame the other driver's hesitation (hesitating at a yellow light to turn left and then at the last second slamming on the brakes when I was right behind, about to follow through the light).

Here in Switzerland, you can get a license for a moped or scooter (max 50cc) when you are 14, but have to wait to drive a car until you are 18.  On the other hand, a 14 year old can walk into a bar and drink beer or wine (have to wait until you are 18 for the hard stuff).  With that, I am on the fence - I'm not sure if it is better that you are introduced to alcohol before you can drive or after.

In Northern Ireland your can drive from 17 years old, although I might have started a couple of years younger.  ;) I had my first car, an Austin Mini when I was 15.

As for the beer, you get it for being good at school.  :DD

I got my learners permit at 15 1/2, and my license a day or two after my 16th birthday. I could drive at a much younger age. In fact, I could hot wire my old man's Falcon by the time I was 14.

I taught my daughter to drive when she was 13. In fact, she was doing bootlegger 180's in her mother's Plymouth Gran Fury in a vacant parking lot.  :yahoo:

I'd say with the number of Canadians and Americans frequenting this site, you'd better add Canada and the US as choices...it's not just all about England - even if USF1 was a big flop.   ;)

We've got a heat wave here in the hills. All the way up to 38 F (3C ). We're running around in shirtsleeves.

I wonder if vem0 is computer generated.

As some of you may know, I am Scottish, but have been resident in Western Canada for 15 years now.  Yes, I still sound 100% Scottish, so no Englishman, nor Canadian can understand what I say most every other day!!!  :DD

All the best,
Cal :)

I rarely have any trouble with the Scottish accent Cal, but then my Nan was Scottish and my Dad was born in Greenock.  :good:
