Richard Petty is known as The King of NASCAR. 7 championships, 200 career wins (second most is his long-time rival, David Pearson, with 105). He is far and away the most popular driver in the history of the series.
The Darlington Southern 500 was run as a throw-back race this year. The cars used paint jobs from the classic era and even the TV commentators wore vintage clothes. King Richard got to take an honorary lap behind the pace car at the head of the field. He drove his 1967 Plymouth Belvedere GTX, the car he won 27 of that season's 48 races in.
One problem - he kept going! They finally had to black flag him to get him off the track.
Long live the King!

That's kinda awesome.
I can imagine Mario Andretti wondering why he never tried to do that.

He doesn't have to. He's still going driving passengers in the two seater... ;) :)
