Title: What is the fastest F1 car of all time?
Post by: John S on April 14, 2021, 01:26:47 PM
Should be simple - the present F1 cars must be fastest surely?

Well this article from Motorsport mag has one or two suprises.

I enjoyed reading it in this waiting time between GPs, hope you find it interesting too.

Wonder how many mph the grooved tires cut
off top speed.

As I recall, the FIA's stated reason for grooved tires was to create more aero drag via wider tires without creating more mechanical grip.

......And there was me thinking they did it in case Bernie decided to turn sprinklers on unexpectadly at race tracks.  :DD

The treaded tires were also supposed to generate less grip. That, taken in concert with narrower cars overall, and smaller wings with fewer elements was supposed to reduce cornering speeds as well.
