Title: JPM May Coach Lance Stroll
Post by: cosworth151 on May 16, 2019, 11:46:04 PM
No, it's not April Fools Day. Juan Pablo Montoya was at Barcelona in Racing Point gear. The rumor is that he's going to be their new driving coach.

No word yet if they'll be putting the Emperor Nero in charge of fire safety.

I thought Juan Pablo was married?

Nonetheless, I think he will be a good driver coach... ...for Stroll, and the reserve/development drivers. Something tells me Perez is beyond the level Juan Pablo is likely to be teaching at. We just need to get Stroll to listen to the bits where he needs to change his driving, not just the inevitable tales of derring-do.

Remember how he met his wife? She was with
her boyfriend at a race or practice and JPM started
hitting on her. Don't teach him any NASCAR skills he learned.

...and it turns out JPM won't be coaching Lance or anyone else at Racing Point any time soon. Oh well, it was a nice dream while it lasted...

JPM and his management were known for dropping leaks on things they wanted to have happen, even when they were the only ones with the idea.   :fool: :fool:

According to Zac Brown, Alonso never really had a chance and it was the team's fault. For example, they showed up for the first test at Texas without a steering wheel for the car! The "experienced" team they partnered with was running the other two cars that failed to qualify. They lost precious practice time after Alonso's crash because the back up car was the wrong color and was still in the paint shop. Then on bump day they put the wrong gears in the car and turned what Brown said was a 229MPH car into a 227MPH car. Unfortunately, pretty typical of Macca in recent years.

To Alonso's credit he declined McLaren buying him
a seat for the race.

Perhaps we've found out what Paddy Lowe has been doing for the last couple of months, he's been a consultant on the Macca Indy project.   :D :DD

The thread seems to have taken a turn but I will add.....if Alonso wants to add an Indy win he should be in the seat of a team with some Indy history, not Macca who are on a steep learning curve it seems.

It does go to show that even in a 'spec' series, there is the possibility for a huge gap between 'haves' and 'have nots'

I'm not sure what Alonso's current contract status is with McLaren. It's possible that he wants to maintain his ties there. If their F1 program continues its rebound his retirement may be short lived.

Won't that be a delicate situation?  If rumours are to be believed 'team Alonso' was being held back by having Fernando's friends on the job which didn't necessarily advance the programme.

Hard to say either way, but he left, and they've improved.  If they keep improving, bringing Alonso back might end up throwing a wrench in the works.

I do love the idea of McLaren getting into as many series as possible.  That's certainly where they gained their strength.  Having Alonso on point for various projects is going to be a good way to make them seem legitimate.  I think it might be a benefit to the F1 team as well.  We've seen there's a 'driver academy' for drivers, but where do teams groom the strategists, mechanics, designers and PR people?

Tied to a two-year ambassadorial contract (so expect him to do Indy 2020 with them also).

Thanks, Ali! I thought he still had official status at Macca. Hopefully they can get it together a little better next year.

I was thinking maybe they could put a lanyard on the steering wheel so it won't be left behind. Many gas caps already have them.  ;)
