Title: Where there's smoke...
Post by: Wizzo on June 02, 2007, 08:35:44 PM

With England bracing itself for the nationwide smoking ban, some experts are warning that drivers could soon begin taking greater risks.

As of July 1st, it will be illegal for anyone to smoke a cigarette in a public place and new research shows that many people will take to smoking in their cars instead. Privilege Insurance has found that when the smoking ban was introduced in Scotland, there was a 14 per cent rise in people who lit up in their car. Of these, 11 per cent said that their driving had been negatively affected by smoking while behind the wheel.

Many road safety experts are campaigning for smoking behind the wheel to be banned as they say it is dangerous. This latest research by Privilege shows that more people are likely to light up while driving and this could lead to more accidents on our roads.

"Drivers are already prohibited from using hand held mobile phones when driving, and last year Privilege revealed that drivers are twice as likely to crash when they are eating or drinking, so puffing on a cigarette most certainly won't be safe," said Jennifer Culley from Privilege Insurance.

"Today's research shows that 47 per cent of drivers would either stop smoking or cut back on the number of times they smoke at the wheel, if it was proved to increase their risk of crashing

"But what's worrying is that 40 per cent of drivers across Scotland and England said they would still smoke even if it was proven to be dangerous," she concluded.

Over here, the smoking laws are state by state. They just passed one here in Ohio, on the grounds that private clubs would be exempt. Now a judge has said no exemptions. The veterans' groups are up in arms. The governor has ordered the Atty. Gen. to contest the ruling.

On an average afternoon, My AMVETS post would be about a third to half full, mostly retirees. Now it's odd to find more than 2 or 3 people in there. We had to cancel the charity bingo on Sundays. Not even enough people to pay for the hall.

Now that "Big Nanny" has knocked off smoking, they are going after fried food. They got McDonald's to do away with Super Size, and several places, like NYC, are outlawing most common frying oils! Any of that going on over there, yet?

I agree with cosworth regarding The Big Nanny state concept.
Why are they not fining all the Kids spitting out chewing gum all over the place?

Much too much nanny state, made me weep when they said the smoking ban did'nt affect pubs in Eire, they only went to the large pubs with space outside for smoking areas, what about the reported 600 that shut 'cos they are tiny little places with no room. NEVER believe a politician.
