Title: No pre-season testing so how does this work?
Post by: Andy B on February 16, 2021, 12:01:17 AM
I have just read the below from Sky Sports F1 and it seem Ferrari have been testing all be it with 2018 car you are not going to tell me there was no benefit for 2021?
It does seem Ferrari can write their own rules!

Ferrari complete busy week of testing
Five days, seven drivers and more than 500 laps for Ferrari in their week of testing with their 2018 car at their Fiorano test track.

Junior drivers and last year's F2 protagonists Mick Schumacher and Callum Ilott rounded off the test in the SF71H on Friday, after a week in which the Scuderia's drivers and team got back in the

"The most important aspect of the test was to give the Scuderia official race drivers, Charles and Carlos, the opportunity to get back into the swing of driving again after the winter break," said sporting director Laurent Mekies.

"For the FDA guys it was another opportunity to experience driving a Formula 1 car.

"I think the best thing about the week was the atmosphere in the garage at our home track, with all the guys really happy to be back on track, to prepare as well as possible for the upcoming season."

No worries Andy, it's all legal and why wouldn't you do it if you have your own track in your backyard. Alpha Tauri also ran a previous STR car for Tsunoda at Imola late in Jan, Gasly may also have taken part as well.

More difficult for British teams as rather difficult to explain running bygone era cars at Silverstone, or any British track, as necessary travel or work in present UK lockdown rules.

McLaren have filming day/s coming up at Silverstone with the 2021 car and no doubt other British based teams will follow suit. This is inside UK covid safe rules as it's work towards getting this year's F1 season underway.

Anyway using an old spec car is not such a good indicator for the coming season since aero is changing quite a bit this year, especially in the rear floor area, so correlation may be almost impossible. There's also different tyres that must be used for such running and that spec is again different to race tyre spec.
