We could see over 1000bhp this year with no tokens in play.
Well that's according to a report by the editor of Grandprix247.com.
Renault have already signalled they are going ultra aggressive with engine development now Ferrari are pushing on hard as well. Wonder if Merc has as much room to respond, or are we in for closer racing? - I do hope so.
This is all helped by the extra fuel allowance of course, but even then will they be able to run at full power for more than part of the race? :DntKnw:
Perhaps the biggest gains for Ferrari will be in the power unit designated 062/1 which will be very different from that of 2016.
On the cards is a total redesign of the combustion chambers including a multi-jet ignition system as well as major changes to the electrical elements and energy harvesting systems of the power unit.
Insiders reveal that Ferrari are targeting power levels exceeding 1000 bhp or around 50 bhp more than Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen had on tap last year.
It is also important to remember that in 2017 there will be no token system to restrict power unit development, thus during the course of the season engines are set to improve on a regular basis.

Renault did that in previous years. Frankly, I see it as a lack of confidence in their engine/power unit.

Early in the season reliability can gain points. No use in being the fastest if you don't fnish.

True, but I sort of expect Mercedes to be reliable and fast.

It's definitely one of the most interesting and promising opportunities to bring the racing closer than we've seen for a long time.
How long will it take the other teams to catch up to the Mercedes engine?
How close is the Mercedes engine to being at its full potential?
How much of the development lead that Mercedes has can they sustain?
We might even see more of teams running their two cars with different engine variants, if the rules permit it.
However it plays out, it has to be better than locking in an advantage at the start of the year and messing about with tokens to eke out frustratingly small improvements.

Agreed.
But there's still room in the top 10 if all Mercedes power cars finish.
Certainly reliability is much higher across the board than even 10 years ago.
