Title: Glock Sick, Misses Quali at Valencia
Post by: cosworth151 on June 23, 2012, 01:20:01 PM
Marussia F1 driver Timo Glock has skipped qualifying at Valencia. He is ill with a stomach ailment. The team doesn't have a reserve driver. Their test driver, Maria de Villota, doesn't have a super license.

Glock took part in FP3 earlier today, but was clearly off pace. The is no official word what will happen for the race. If Glock is well enough to race, it will take a special dispensation from the stewards for him to compete.

Get well soon, Timo!

Coulthard didn't have much sympathy for him in his comments about drivers just sucking it up and pushing through.

I felt Coulthard was being really harsh on him- can you imagine throwing up (or worse..) at 180mph? It would be quite dangerous.

It's a bit daft that their test driver doest have a super-licence though.

If Timo needs to skip qualifying to be well enough to race, then he needs to skip qualifying. Also, if he's not well enough to do qualifying, skipping would still be the right move, regardless of what happened on race day. All the examples DC cited when justifying his position were people who were sick on race day. Well, sorry DC, but there are no points for qualifying and there are points for the race. It's more important to be well on Sunday than Saturday...

Timo has been given the dispensation to race, subject to medical clearance. His time in FP3, while not to his usual standard, was in the 107% margin. If Narian Karthikeyan can get into the Spanish Grand Prix that way, then Timo was bound to get provisional permission.

Yes, it's daft that Marussia's test driver lacks a superlicence. Hint: this is why most teams don't recruit a lead tester purely for money and headlines...

Well stated, Ali. I didn't hear DC (I had a Sky link) but it sounds like he was way out of line.

The lack of a superlicence is also why they have to list de Villota as a test driver and not a reserve driver.

Timo's not racing today.
