Title: My first F1 Race was...
Post by: Jericoke on April 11, 2019, 04:22:39 PM
I want to see how our viewing experiences compare with the history of F1's 999 races:

The first race I watched was #582 - 1996 Australian Grand Prix (Jacques Villeneuve's debut)
The first race I attended was #923 - 2015 Canadian Grand Prix

The first one I attended was the 2010 Italian GP, not got a clue where it comes on the list.

I also can't identify exact numbers, as I used to visit my uncle and watch F1 in the Mansell Era.   I started watching F1 with real interest 2-3 years before Damon Hill came along.

Best Regards,
Cal :)

Don't know the numbers, but the first race I saw was the '64 or '65 Belgian GP. I lean a bit toward '65, but it was so long ago and I was sick, just channel surfing when I stumbled across it. The first race I attended was the '78 U.S. GP at Watkins Glen. Mario on pole in the beautiful Lotus, but Carlos Reutemann took the win for Ferrari. I remember I drove a FIAT 128 in those days. It was difficult to engage reverse in that car. You had to push down on the shifter, then while holding it down move it to the right and back. It was often accompanied by grinding gears to my embarrassment and chagrin. We saw Carlos arrive at the circuit with his family in a 128. When he went to back into his parking place he clanked the gears as well. After that I wasn't so embarrassed. The entire garage area was a smallish Quonset hut with the teams stuffed in cheek by jowl and a spectator aisle down the middle. Lotus was desperate to keep the side pods of their cars covered, but it was virtually impossible. I have 8 or 10 rolls of film from there but no way to upload them.

I'm using Wikipedia, have to count off from the nearest hundred, but I can do it if I take my shoes off.

Can't remember the first race I watched on TV but first attended was the British GP in 2002. Was very lucky then - guest of Jaguar Racing (remember them!) and got helicoptered in. Awesome!

Couldn't tell you what the first one I watched was though!

Early 90’s was when I started watching regularly.

First live race was 2007 Italian GP.  I joined Ian for my 3rd time to Monza and then saw the Spanish GP in 2012.

I’m due for another race soon...

Besides the '78 race at Watkins Glen, I went to 5 GP's at Long Beach and 2 in Las Vegas. Stayed in a motor home and got free admission so it was easy.

The first one I remember watching on TV was Monaco. I think it was 1962 but it might have been 63. It was on ABC's Wide World of Sports with Jim McKay. The first one I went to was at The Glen in 1969. My cousin Steve had just come home from the army after doing a TOD in Nam. He bought a 1966 Ford LTD 2 door hard top (390 c.i.d. with a 4bbl) and we wanted to give it a road trip. The two American drivers, Mario & Pete Lovely, both dnf'ed. Rindt won it in a Ford powered car so we weren't too disappointed.

I have been following F1 since the early 1950s, probably before 1955. We had no TV in those days, had to wait a month or two for "Sports Cars Illustrated" magazine to read their coverage, maybe with a black and white photo or two. Stirling Moss was my favorite, I bought a book he wrote that was fascinating, wish I still had it.

Dad told me today that he sat me and my brother down in front of the TV for Grands Prix from the moment we were old enough to sit in high chairs to eat lunch. I'm not sure what race that would put me on, but I don't count those because in those days I didn't understand that I was watching anything other than pretty patterns on a screen. I certainly didn't understand that when we got a F1 game for the PC a few years later, that it was anything to do with a real-life activity of any description.

The first race I remember deliberately watching was 2/3 of the way through the 1993 French Grand Prix, race #540.

The first race I remember deliberately watching from start to (almost) the end (and very nearly my last) was the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, race #551.

The first qualifying I watched "live" was the 2002 British Grand Prix #691.

The first race I watched "live" was the 2009 British Grand Prix, #811.

(Being a Jordan/Midland/Spyker/Force India/Racing Point/whatever-it's-called-this-week fan helps. They celebrated their 500th race as "Team Silverstone" today!)
