Title: F1 Teams Reject Pirelli's Proposed Tires for 2020
Post by: cosworth151 on December 11, 2019, 05:47:20 PM
The teams have unanimously rejected Pirelli's proposed tires for next season. They were supposed to encourage more close in racing. Instead, they were labeled as a “disappointment” by Sebastian Vettel and described as “very weird and very bad” by McLaren’s Carlos Sainz.

The same tires used in this past season will be used again for 2020.

And yet nearly all the teams complained that the 2019 tires were finicky and hard to "turn on". I have long felt that the major problem with racing in general was too much grip. If you release the throttle into a corner and then immediately slam it back to the floor, there's very little finesse in driving. No coincidence that the best races over the last few seasons have been in the rain.

I certainly don't think the teams should have a veto over a change of tyres, surely all changes will affect handling - isn't that the point of making a change.

Mind you it's a non brainer from the teams point of view to stay with what they know, saves extra development work in a year when they need as much resource available for the new spec cars in 2021.

Whoever thought it would be a good idea to dramatically change tyre compounds for the last year with these spec cars must have a screw loose.  ::) A waste of the very limited test time if you ask me.

I would prefer they shorten, not lengthen the sweet spot operating range.  They can take away refueling, but I would like SOME team strategy, and not just the dash in at the end to throw on a second pair of tires just because the rules say they have to.

How has Pirelli managed to make a worse tyre than last year? I'd expected at least one team to prefer the 2020 version than last year (most likely Haas, who hated the 2019 tyres, but apparently hate the 2020 ones even more).

I presume the FIA gave them some very bizarre specs and the Pirelli engineers just  :DntKnw: and made what they were asked for.

It's also possible they intentionally made a bad batch of tires so they wouldn't have to change their processes for 2020.  (Seems risky, if that were to get out, that would be a black eye for all involved, and a good way to get your contract revoked.  So I doubt this happened.)

Don’t the low profile tires come in 2020?  If so, then Pirelli have to completely re-tool anyway.

No, the bigger 18" wheels will be fitted to F2 cars this year and will not come in until next year (2021) in F1. Probably two reasons:-
(1) Gives Pirelli a ramp up to make sure carcasses, compounds etc are up to scratch
(2) Brings all the car changes in at the same time in F1 - means 2020 car development is not overloaded in view of major 2021 changes.

I can confirm it is reason (2) that explains why Pirelli's tyres only have to change in 2021. Michelin complained about the tender having two tyre types, and cited this as a reason to not trust the FIA's good intentions.
