Title: Lewis Hamilton: New Record for F1 Pole Positions
Post by: Jericoke on September 02, 2017, 06:12:02 PM
Winning a race in F1 is difficult, but I would suggest that winning a pole position is harder.  A win is a lot of good laps with a mix of luck.  A pole position is one perfect lap at the exact right time.  There is some luck involved, but not when you've got 69 of them.  Schumacher's records seemed unassailable even as he was setting them, and Hamilton is making them look like a checklist to greatness.

As a question though:  if Vertsappen or Ricciardo had outqualified him, but he still started first due to penalties, would that count as his 69th pole?  If so, that would be a hard record to celebrate, so I'm glad he won it straight up.

When you have one of the 4 or maybe 6 cars that can grab pole
it's not as special..Look at Indycar...there are many chances for different pole sitters

What you're saying is that he's got at a 1/4 chance of winning pole, so out of 201 entries, 50 poles would be expected.

Well, he's beaten your expectations by almost 40%.

I'm not declaring Hamilton the all time greatest, but he's certainly checked off a credential.

I'm not a fan but I have to agree with this statement.

Back when Schumi set the record, I certainly thought it would last much longer. Lewis has many good years ahead of him, if he doesn't pull a Nico & retire early. I think he can run his tally much higher.

It's an impressive record for Hamilton, especially given that it's not easy to end up driving cars which are consistently at the front of the grid.  He has managed to drive for the right team at the right time more often than anyone else in recent years, so he has earned it.

...sure it is, you just do whatever the opposite of what Alonso is doing.
