Post by: cosworth151 on May 29, 2008, 03:15:51 PM
From AutoWeek, in case you have some spare change to spend:

The legendary Porsche that Steve McQueen nearly drove to victory in the 1970 12 Hours of Sebring and later was featured in the 1971 classic film Le Mans, goes on the auction block in August.

The 1970 Porsche 908/2 is expected to sell for $1.5 million to $2 million, said Bonhams & Butterfields, the organizers of the auction Aug. 15 in Carmel Valley, California.

McQueen, whose hits included The Thomas Crown Affair, The Great Escape and Bullitt, co-piloted the car with Peter Revson to a second-place finish at Sebring, 23 seconds behind racing legend Mario Andretti. In a performance worthy of the silver screen, McQueen drove with a broken foot in a duct-taped cast and led for much for the race against more powerful, better-funded factory teams.

McQueen later drove the Porsche at the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans, and using cameras mounted on the car gathered footage for the movie released the following year.

The car competed five times at Le Mans. Power comes from a 3.0-liter air-cooled flat-eight, rated at 350 hp.

The complete online catalog of the auction hasn’t been released yet, but a 1960 Jaguar E2A driven by Dan Gurney, Walt Hansgen and Bruce McLaren in a number of races in the 1960s is expected to sell for more than $7 million.
