Title: All new cars to have daytime running lights
Post by: Wizzo on September 26, 2008, 09:43:21 AM
I see the plans have been resurrected to fit all new cars with daytime running lights.

The proposals have been met with fierce opposition from car manufacturers and safety groups claim cyclists and pedestrians will be put at risk. Under the plans all new cars will have to be fitted with this equipment in three years.

Car manufacturers have questioned the thinking behind the proposals, saying they will be harmful to the environment. Some believe that drivers will forget to switch on their headlights at night. Also pointed out is that there could be confusion among road users between these lights and front fog lamps.  :DntKnw:

Manufacturers have also claimed it could also add to carbon emissions exactly when car makers are under pressure from Brussels to cut them.  ::)

Daytime running lights have been a requirement in Canada for a few years now. It does make it easier to see oncoming traffic. But what some vehicles have is brighter turn signal lamps that stay on when the vehicle is running and no rear lights on at all. When the headlight switch is activated, then all lights revert to normal operation. Lots of vehicles have a sensor that will turn on the headlights under low light conditions.
I like the daytime running lights but then I have always operated my vehicle with the headlights on at all times, day or night since I started driving over 30 years ago.
