Title: Now had the Covid Vaccination jab
Post by: John S on February 05, 2021, 01:27:54 PM
Got the jab Weds eve, slick operation at the Grantham vaccination centre, thanks to all the staff for their efforts.  :good:

My brother in law commented that I'm now a '1 in 10', million that is as ten million vaccination mark passed on Weds eve.  :swoon:

I'm fine aside from a sore arm and a thumping headache yesterday, I don't usually suffer headaches but guess some reaction to drug welcome as it shows efficacy. Mine was Pfizer.

I rather oddly also belched rather a lot yesterday, well over a couple dozen times, again I'm not prone to windy pops so it might be a side effect. Might just have easily been summat I ate too, so no big deal. All seems fine today.

Congrats, John! Glad to hear that it went so well.  :yahoo:

I technically become eligible for mine on mine on Monday (Ages 65+) Since Ohio is sending most of the vaccine to the big cities, who knows when I'll actually get it.

Canada has messed up vaccinations so much I'll be lucky to get one by Christmas.

Definitely makes the Canadian Grand Prix unlikely.

New Zealand does not get any vaccines till March and then frontline workers are first up and quite rightly so. So quite unknown when I'll get mine but we seem to be in a different situation than most countries.

My dad, brother and the elderly ex-neighbour in my support circle have all had their first jabs. I don't know what Dad and my brother got (I'm not sure they do either, as it was a very rushed care home mass vaccination and they spent most of their time helping residents get their jabs). My ex-neighbour definitely got Pfizer, and praised the excellent organisation at their GP.

I expect Mum to get her first jab at some point in the next few weeks, and me to get one in the second half of 2021 (since I'm in the last category for eligibility, being under-50 and without any aggravating conditions). I do know my practice shuts twice a week, on average, to do an afternoon of COVID vaccination.

Further, the local theatre is using venue payments for COVID vaccination to keep solvent, and the local football club is preparing to offer mass vaccination too. Amusingly, this meant some of the team staff got vaccinated because there were a few doses left over after volunteers and vulnerable people available at short notice shared out the preparation crate. This is because the system here is "waste not, want not", and the local hub takes it as a point of pride that it's only wasted 1 dose since rollout started.

a scene when they stuck you. Still waiting for mine but
I should be safe for 6 months.

I got Pfizer one, no dramas - except they were not offering even a little sweetie to us brave soldiers.
You just get plonked on a socially distanced chair with a hand written time sticker on you with a monitor watching to see you don't jump the lights.  ;)
Very different to when I got the Polio jab when I was 9 or 10.  :D

There's a mix of OxfordAstrazeneca and Pfizer being issued where I am (my relatives have OxfordAstrazeneca, my ex-neighbour has Pfizer).

Still waiting for mine, and our company actually makes the base Pharmaceutical agent for the Moderna vaccine.  Switzerland has completely botched the vaccine rollout.  When I registered for the vaccine, I was told it would be late February.  Still waiting...they got down to the 70-80 year olds and ran out of vaccine.  Even closed down the vaccine stations they had opened up with great fanfare.

I got my second Moderna shot last Wednesday. The only reaction I had was from the first one. Just a little rash on the elbow of the arm I got the shot in. It only lasted a couple of days.

Dad and my brother had their second OxfordAstrazeneca jabs. Neither noticed it 2 minutes after it was done. My ex-neighbour had his second a little bit before and the only effect he noticed was that he was a bit hungrier for the next day or so ("good, more excuse to eat nice food").

Mum's due to have her second jab soon. Northern Ireland's started jabbing my age group but England has not, so I will be patient.

Switzerland has completely botched the vaccine rollout.

Here in NZ the rollout is soooooooo slow and then it's reported that 5700 vaccine doses have been wasted by people not turning up!
I find that remarkable why would you not turn up?
For perspective 5700 is a significant number with a population of 5 mill.

The rollout in Ontario (the Canadian province I live in) is being done on a location by location basis. So you can sign up with as many locations as you want, then you go to the first one that says they have a shot ready for you.  In theory, I could get thirty calls in one day saying they're ready for me.  All 30 shots would sit and wait until I show up, or cancel.  I haven't heard of any being wasted, but I assume it's a matter of time before those numbers start to come out.

(We also had an all day outage of one of our biggest phone companies, so it was hard to book appointments, which required telephone confirmation)

Several reasons I've heard (I'd like to clarify beforehand that I believe every single one is either something a reasonable system and reasonable health service users should have anticipated... ...or complete tosh):

- You got it from somewhere else (some systems have had problems with people being auto-issued duplicate invites, others with no good way to back out of an appointment if received earlier)

- You can't make the appointment issued and there's no way to reschedule (the UK has had this to some extent - particularly with people unable to get time off work at short notice - but has a system to ensure doses are unlikely to be wasted)

- You think you don't need it now (NZ has lifted most of its restrictions, and in the UK even small increases in freedom have led to disproportionately large decreases in the perceived threat level/importance of COVID-19)

- You are worried about vaccine escape and potentially futility (wrongly, since no variant has total escape and some have zero vaccine escape).

- You've seen the UK officially leave pandemic status due to vaccines, look at the fact it has had numerous other COVID-related problems, assume this is one more inaccurate statement and wonder what disaster's being hidden this time (I've seen this from some non-UK contacts)

- You aren't ready psychologically for the vaccine (some people want more information about the vaccine to be comfortable taking it, either because they don't have/know how to effectively use the internet for this purpose or due to the vaccine being an emergency-use rather than mainline vaccine (thus having more question marks on certain matters e.g. long-term effects). Some GPs have taken to calling everyone who misses an appointment or indicates they wish to miss it, to have a 10-20 minute conversation about it. This has so far (anecdontally) been 95-97% effective in persuading people to accept and attend vaccine appointments).

- You are anti-vaxx (about 8% of people in the UK are anti-vaxx in general, but usually the general population doesn't care much due to herd immunity). Probably not the main factor in NZ, else I'd expect a lot more appointments to have been missed (5700 is not even 1% of the population, and I think NZ's had more than 1% worth of first doses).

Ali.
The 5700 is just <1% of the population but you have to take into account that only 2% are vaccinated, it is reasonable to assume a percentage would not have made the appointment for a good reason but I am led to believe that if a call is received to say you cannot make it then that dose can be used on anyone who want's it. It probably is a case that because we are and have been Covid free for so long there is a lethargy to peoples approach.
My wife and I, very royal, have ours booked for the 11th May and I expect to be given the date of the second at that time.

I'm now off on a two day motorcycle ride. Bye for now.

Many people here in the US aren't getting their second shot.
They may have fears about it or figure if everyone else gets
there's I'll be safe anyway. Same for mask wearing. There a
inconvenience but if it keeps you safe what's the harm.

Potentially 1/3 of the doses wasted is a lot, in that case.

Here, doses for people who cancel are used on whoever can get there on short notice. If GPs can't give it to someone both local and eligible, they'll give it to someone local but not techically eligible. As a result, most shots that weren't given to someone missing an appointment ended up in people's arms, just not always the planned ones.

Parts of New Zealand are rural and might have difficulty getting people in at short notice, though. Especially with a "lethargy to people's approach".

Enjoy the motorbike ride!

Second dose at the end of July.

Here in Ohio, the governor has started the Vax-A-Million program. any Ohioan who has had at least one shot may register. People 18 years and older can win $1 million. Folks 14-17 can win a full, 4 year collage scholarship. There will be one drawing for each group per week for 5 weeks.

Yes, I am registered!

Dose #2 received on Saturday!

This was despite the best efforts of the volunteer, who took one look at my record and said, "I'll consult the doctor but I don't think I should give you the jab."

Fortunately, the doctor remembered me from last time (I'd collapsed and had to be given oxygen, which I guess was pretty memorable) and we agreed on the same plan as agreed at the end of last appointment. Whereupon the volunteer asked the doctor, "Shall we put her on 30 minutes' observation?"

I felt I had to chirp up and say, "Yes please!"

The jab went well. I got assigned 40(!) minutes of observation (I brought a book, and I'm well into 1991 in the highly-recommended The Digital Antiquarian (https://www.filfre.net/the-digital-antiquarian-e-book-library/) by Jimmy Maher) in a seat near the backstage medical area, but I felt well throughout, the staff checked up on me at sensible intervals. No post-jab consequences and I hope to be optimally immune in 3 weeks.
