Title: Anyone else notice that Qualifying isn't coming down to the last second?
Post by: Jericoke on July 31, 2021, 06:07:12 PM
I miss the excitement of pole positions being set in a desperate last lap set after the time has run out.

I'm not just complaining about Lewis holding up Max today (everyone seems to agree it was a valid tactic), but over the course of this season, the pole time is usually the winner's FIRST flying lap of Q3, not their last.

Is the issue tires?  Are the hybrid power systems so complex that preparing a car for a lap is difficult?   Do the drivers really only have one 'perfect lap' in them for the   day?  (I can't believe that of Hamilton!)  Are the drivers' psychological tricks getting into everyone's head?

I have noticed that as well. It used to be a fat lap was set and everyone tried to beat it. Does not seem to be that way anymore.

I think Haas made a mistake not sending Mick out for at least a couple of laps, just to be sure that everything was in good order after his FP3 shunt. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a big mistake.

One of the downsides of the current method of trying to stop people from spoiling each other's final attempts in a session is that it often spoils drivers' own attempts at a lap.
