Title: Giving in to grid penalties
Post by: Robem64 on March 03, 2018, 01:39:51 PM
This acceptance kind of makes me sad for the sport!

This does not auger well for Red Bull's challenge to Mercedes (which is a shame, as they seem to be nearly keeping up with them speed-wise, contrasting Ferrari and the others).

Well, if they're trying to Americanize the sport, there are plenty of 'strategic' penalties in sports like Basketball and NFL football.  Even baseball has a few scenarios where teams will take penalties intentionally.

This is true - and F1's had its share for decades.

However, I feel there is a difference between a basically sound competitor taking a deliberate penalty in an attempt to gain advantage and a weak competitor being forced to do so in order not to lose more ground than necessary. I find the first cynical, "part of the game" or praiseworthy (depending on the exact reason) and the second just plain sad. Renault's statements (including the one earlier about turning down power to get reliability) suggest to me that we're looking at a weak competitor trying not to fall further behind.
