Title: Heidfeld puzzled at his not being in more demand.
Post by: Scott on October 14, 2009, 11:13:47 AM
Me too.  I don't get why he has such a hard time getting a good drive.  He's paid his dues, and shown countless times that he is faster than his teammates, but they still seem to get the drives that should go to him...Kubica just being the latest.

From Planet F1

Nick Heidfeld admits he is puzzled by his low standing in the eyes of much of the racing world.

With his BMW-Sauber teammate Robert Kubica assured of a drive with Renault next year, Heidfeld's position is more tenuous with the German revealing he has only 'a few options' for the 2010 season.

Kubica has partnered Heidfeld at BMW since midway through the 2006 season and while the Pole outshone his colleague in 2008, Heidfeld scored more points in 2007 and currently lies six points ahead of Kubica in the Driver's Championship.

"In terms of the public perception, I am behind drivers who are not as good as me," he told Auto Motor und Sport.

"In 2007 I was faster than Robert and I am again now. But everyone talks only of 2008," he said.

"I would have thought logic would prevail in Formula One, but unfortunately your image is not only the result of numbers," he bemoaned.

It's all about sponsorship, isn't it?

Why get a third rate German when you can have the top Pole?

I personally still wonder why Kimi got the call ahead of Heidfeld to go to McLaren.  Following the same path, I'm sure Nick would've won that championship for Ferrari.

I disagree, Kimi is a much better driver than Nick.

Kimi is a excellent driver when he can be bothered but ive always rated Heidfeld as a driver and would love to see what he can do in a decent car.Hes had some good results this season in a less than competitive car.

I agree.  Nick more often than Kimi drives above the car's ability.

Kimi has been driving a dog of a car this season and has done remarkably well,...Considering.

That's funny I thought the McLaren was the real dog this season yet they are now getting decent results, but we don't attribute it all to Lewis. Just maybe Ferrari engineers have been picking themselves off the floor too.

Without Massa to keep him honest it's hard to say if Kimi is the real difference in the car's performance.

Mclaren was one of the worst cars at the start of the season, but they got a their act together as the results are there for all to see.

Not to take anything away from Kimi... who is my favourite driver on the grid right now... but at Sauber Heidfeld was the equal of both Kimi and Massa.  I was surprised he was overlooked as his teammates moved on.

I don't think anyone would regret taking Kimi over Nick, but I believe that Nick would have had the same success as Kimi.

Nick is a good driver but F1 is as much about reputations as it is about speed, and sadly he has done nothing really to enhance his.  I wonder if he is almost too quiet, I hardly remember seeing any publicity involving him or much in the way of interview with him.  It is a shame, I do rate him and I think he does deserve to get a good drive next year.

Nick has had the misfortune of always being paired with a currently "hot" driver. Because of that, he's always been viewed as a #2 driver, no matter how well he performed.

I would prefer to have Kimi in my team over Nick, but I would have Heidfeld over Trulli, Kubica, Glock, de la Rossa, Heikki... quite a few actually. I think he deserves a decent drive next year.

Same as Rubens then.  :D

Nick is  a steady driver and is not capable of getting the little bit extra out of the car. F1 telemetry doesnt lie and most teams would have access to that data too.
I am sure he will get a drive though but to compare him to Kimi is not at all valid IMO. Lots of times Nick has qualified well, driven well and somehow lost out. Quite inexplicable but imo has a lot to do with the drivers attitude , personae and so on.

As we can see at Brazil this time round, Nick got eliminated in Q1 while Kubica made Q3. Just underscores my point.

I'm sorry, but the qualifying in Brazil really does not show anything at all other than pure luck as to who got their laps in during the right moment.  Next we'll be saying Vettel isn't as talented as Webber based on yesterday!

As was I, but I still say that yesterday, in fact this whole weekend, is not the best choice of example to show who is the better driver.  I am actually of the opinion Kubica is a great driver, I think last year I would have had him in the top 3 on the grid, but I just disagree we can use the Brazilian GP to show it, as it showed all sorts of anomalies.

Al I was saying is that Nick tends to get himself on the wrong end of the stick. No reflection on his ability.
