Title: Does Ferrari have back up plan for F1 exit?
Post by: John S on June 04, 2018, 03:53:02 PM
Could Marchionne see Indycar as better future than F1?

Sure, but I think only a small fraction of Europeans/Asians have ever heard of IndyCar, and a small fraction of those watch it on a regular basis.

Ferrari always pretends that they ARE F1, but now they would leave it to join a mostly spec series?  That would be crazy, even if it was because they aren't allowed to keep their ridiculous FOM payment for just being Ferrari.

McLaren had meetings with IndyCar over the Detroit week-end about a 2019 series entry.

I'm sure that if Ferrari decided to join, you'd find the rules become very friendly to what Ferrari wants from a series.

I like that IndyCar is 100% independent of the FIA, but I would love to see more collaboration between IndyCar and F1.  After all, Indy was a championship event for a decade.  F1 teams spend plenty of money developing every part of the car, why not let some of those parts travel to IndyCar.  It stops Indy from being a single make series, and provides an opportunity to reduces costs in F1 by using the economy of scale.

I'd love to see IndyCar adopt the full F1 spec, so that IndyCar is essentially an American only F1 series.  I hate to see IndyCar become a 'feeder' series for F1, but perhaps a junior series like major league baseball has American and National leagues that cross over, but still do their own thing.

The problem is that most IndyCar teams couldn't even come close to being able to afford F1 cars. The F1 cars probably wouldn't be very well suited to banked ovals, either.

America is a big market for Ferrari, but not big enough for them to concentrate solely on Indycar. They need worldwide exposure.

WEC LMP1 is wide open Lonny at fraction of the cost of F1.
Didn't do Audi to much harm for a good few years.

I was thinking that would be a better fit than Indycar. The problem is that at the moment there is no one to beat in LMP1.

But Lonny for less money than F1 Ferrari could do both Indy car & LMP1 sports cars.

I know that F1 cars are required to be 'unique', but IndyCar doesn't have that limit.  If Williams and Sauber could sell their designs to IndyCar teams, that would help them out quite a bit.

I did forget about the bit where IndyCar runs different cars on ovals than road tracks.  At least, they did that with the DW chassis, I don't know about the new one.

As for exposure, IndyCar is predominantly American, but if they have Ferrari and maybe McLaren involved, it wouldn't be hard for them to expand and compete directly with F1 worldwide.  (No need to re-argue 'the split', but if CART had Ferrari on their side, it would have gone differently.)

True, but would they get the same value in publicity?

I think we can agree I'm a more than casual motorsports fan and I have never seen an LMP1 race.  Certainly Ferrari brings a profile to any series they join, but would it be enough?

Never saw Le Mans? Really? I've followed Group 6, Group 5, IMSA GTP, Group C, WSC, (Why do they keep changing the names?) since Ford unveiled the first GT40. I love 'em. Ferrari Dominated this class in the late '50s and early '60s, and had moments in the '70s and '90s.

But then both You and Lonny are in N. America Jeri.
I'm suggesting Ferrari would use WEC for making a noise in the rest of the world, your already covered by Indy car.

LeMans is normally the same weekend as the Canadian GP, so that's where my attention is sportswise.  I can't really dedicate a day to watching a race though.

My history with LeMans is very similar to Lonny's. I've missed much of it for the past several years because the AMVETS State Convention here in Ohio was the same week-end. This year they moved the Convention back a week.  :yahoo:

One year I followed it on twitter while I was working at the hotel.  It turned out to be more fun than I thought because people would post replays all the time, so I think I ended up watching most of the action but didn't have to dedicate too much screen time.

I will watch as much of the race as my router allows (it seems to not like being on the internet for more than about 8 hours at a time, these days). If the weather is bad, I may even get to watch the last bit at my parents' house and see video for a change.

Perhaps, in combination with a more coherent video strategy, Ferrari + WEC could be a winner. (I'd like to see a "segmented race replay" put on free-to-air/high-reach channels, where the 6-hour races were split into 6 1-hour pieces and shown in the same timeslot each evening across a week - perhaps a few weeks/months later, when casual viewers have forgotten who the news stated had won the race and devoted fans don't have any other races to watch. The Le Mans could be shown in the same style across 4 weeks, maybe during the winter. Anyone wanting to follow along live would still need to get pay TV or (free) Radio Le Mans).

Also, I'll be cheering on Ferrari. Forza Fisico in the #54 GTE-Am Spirit of Race car!
