Title: Pirelli Signs Up for 4 More Years
Post by: cosworth151 on November 28, 2018, 06:33:35 PM
Pirelli has signed on as F1's exclusive tire supplier through the 2023 season. Michelin and Hankook had both expressed interest but didn't follow through.

F1 head honcho Chase Cary said, "They are a premium brand, a clear global leader in motorsport and our ongoing partnership with them is proof once more of our desire to align F1 with the best in motorsport and beyond. We are delighted to have reached this agreement, which guarantees a long-term stable future for such a crucial component of Formula 1."

F1 will switch from 13" wheels & tall sidewalls to 18" wheels with low profile tires in 2021, the second year of the new contract. That means that anybody other than Pirelli would have had to develop tires that could only be used for the 2020 season before switching to the new formula. Also, the new fronts will be narrower than the current tires.

Bit of a stitch up from the regs side, how on earth was anyone new going to be able to produce tyres from scratch at a reasonable cost for one year and than change the wheel size for the rest.

I think Hankook put in a bid but how could they compete.  >:(
Michelin just excused themselves by arguing pre-ordained tyre degredation is not their thing. I think really Michelin didn't fancy the single year task and will wait til the next time in 2024.

Presumably if Michelin, or whoever, was willing to pay enough for 2020 onward, then F1 would have found a way to get Pirelli to stay on for a single season.

Unless this is something regulated by the EU, then F1 really needs to get better at lining up their tenders with spec changes.

As long as they refer to the compounds as Soft, Medium & Hard, people like Martin Brundle don't really care!!  :D

Best Regards,
Cal :)

They do have experience with racing tires. They've been the sole supplier (and title sponsor) of GT racing's Hankook 24 Hour Series. That said, I'm just as glad that Pirelli got it back.

I'm just disappointed we won't have to play guess the compound name anymore.  I think Pirelli should have been made to introduce at least another 5 compounds.  Super-duper Hard, Rock 'ard, road car hard, as soft as silk soft, and really really fast for half a lap soft.

It wouldn't be hard for any supplier to hire experienced talent for designing F1/racing tires.  Naturally those costs would be included with any bid.

I'm glad Pirelli is staying on too.  They've done an amazing job of putting up with FIA's bizarre direction on tire development.  I can't find fault in what Pirelli has provided, only in what they've been asked to provide.
